pc locked after installation

#1 Post by vadopiano »

I tried to install the 'debian-live-10.3.0-amd64-gnome + nonfree.iso' image on a Dell XPS.
Previously Ubuntu was installed on this PC and it worked fine.
I copied the ISO image to a USB stick with dd operating from a PC on which debian is installed and I managed without great problems to get the system working in 'live' mode. Even the wireless card has been recognized as the ISO image also has non-free Atheros drivers. With this mode it seems that everything works fine. So I tried to install the system by creating a partition table like below:
  • New partition 300MB on /dev/nvme0n1 fs fat32 mount point /boot/efi.
New partition 13000MB on /dev/nvme0n1 fs linuxswap.
New partition 22000MB on /dev/nvmeOn1 fs ext4 mount point /
New partition 280000MB on /dev/nvmeOn1 fs ext4 mount point /home
Storage device: solid state drive THNSN5512GPUK NVMe TOSHIBA 512GB
I arrived at the final message of installation completed and the request message to restart without seeing any error message. I then gave the shutdown command and in fact the black screen appeared but the PC was still running and various messages arrived, 10-30 seconds apart:

Since the PC did not turn off and the messages continued to arrive after a few minutes I turned it off with the hardware switch.
Then when I turned the PC back on, everything went well until the desktop environment was loaded, but when I tried to click on the icon of an application to start it almost instantly everything stopped, the screen remained frozen as it was and there was no response either to the touchpad movements or to the pressure on the keyboard keys. Again I had to turn off the hardware switch.
Can anyone give me any indication to solve the problem?

Can you boot with the Live image, install inxi, and give us the output of "inxi -Fxxz" in the terminal?

That will let us know your hardware and driver situation in that session.

This guide is for the 9570 but it suggests disabling modesetting for your NVIDIA card to fix CPU lockups.

Otherwise try installing the intel-microcode package (from a chroot or the rescue shell, obviously).

I'm not so experienced as to be able to modify the kernel parameters, I need more simple and precise indications. I can't open the rescue mode because after a list of messages with many 'OK' I see these lines:

Code: Select all

You are in rescue mode. After logging in, type “journalctl -xb" to view
system logs, "systemctl reboot" to reboot, “systemctl default" or "exit"
to boot into default mode.

Cannot open access to console, the root account is locked.
See sulogin(8) man page for more details.

Press Enter to continue.

Use a search engine, I can't be bothered typing that out again.
