user/ pass not accepted

Feel really stupid did a clean install of Sarge, entered my user/pass etc. When i boot for the first time they do not get accepted. Don't think i mis spelt anything.

Anyway, other than going through the install again, is there a way of booting to root or another way round my problem

At the login prompt, enter root.
At password prompt, enter <root_password>.
# passwd <user_id> # Press return and you are prompted to enter new password for user.
