Installation on DELL inspirion 14 3442 - Nvidia/Bluetooth

Postby frogs » 2020-04-10 23:52

Hello everyone, I'm trying to find a fully functional distro for the DELL Inspirion 14 Notebook model-3442, the one that came closest to what I expected was Debian, few bugs and very stable. But I have a serious problem, because this model has video hybrid intel / Nvidia and I can't get Nvidia to work. Another problem was that in this distro my bluetooth doesn't work either. Below is some information to start a meeting. Someone help me please with a step by step to solve this.

This bellow cause error and my hybrid Nvidia 820M not work!

frogs@linux:~$ lspci | grep 3D
08:00.0 3D controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF117M [GeForce 610M/710M/810M/820M / GT 620M/625M/630M/720M] (rev a1)
frogs@linux:~$
(BusID dessa placa está no slot "08:00.0")

root@linux:/home/frogs# apt-get install x11-xserver-utils
Lendo listas de pacotes... Pronto

Lendo informação de estado... Pronto
x11-xserver-utils is already the newest version (7.7+8).
x11-xserver-utils configurado para instalar manualmente.
0 pacotes atualizados, 0 pacotes novos instalados, 0 a serem removidos e 0 não atualizados.
root@linux:/home/frogs#
(x11-xserver-utils está instalado e funcional.)

This bellow cause missing Nvidia and RTL (bluetooth):

First erro:

Second erro:
ACPI BIOS Error (bug): cold not resolve [\_SB.PCI0.GFX0.DD02._BCL], AE_NOT_FOUND (20180810/psargs-330)

three erro:

"The instructions on this page applies to Debian Wheezy and newer. Debian Squeeze and prior are not supported."

Do you mean that instead of using the debian 10 version I should downgrade to debian 7 wheezy? The document you suggested to me points to procedures that are only supported on Debian wheezy as described in a note on the page. Thank you for your contribution. I will download the debian wheezy iso and test it, then post the result here.

after following the tutorial you proposed I received this error, so I followed the community's contributions to remedy the errors but when I said the command systemctl status nvidia-persistenced.service looks like this:

No, of course not. Debian wheezy went EOL at the end of May 2018. Adapt the guide for buster, it might still work.

And anyway why did you buy NVIDIA hardware if you wanted to use Debian? Are you not familiar with their Social Contract & software guidelines? Do you not know how badly NVIDIA treat the open source community? Why on Earth would you reward such behaviour by giving them your money? :?

EDIT: I'm not really interested in helping you with this, you'll have to wait for somebody else.

Debian really isn't the best distro for a rank beginner. There are some more newbie-friendly distros based on Debian that may be a better choice for you. Some even have an automatic Nvidia driver installer for Optimus laptops like yours.

What vintage is your laptop, anyway?

Edit: oh wait, Haswell. No problems, then.

I bought this laptop in 2016. It came with windows 8, it was upgraded to W 10 home and now I have formatted it and I am testing several distros to find out which one works best. But the funny thing is that a colleague up there says how badly Nvidia treats open source users, but he did not hesitate to deny me help as if I were guilty of Nvidia. But ok, thank you very much everyone, I can manage here. The topic can be closed.

hey man. have you tried going to nvidia and look for the drivers? the same thing you'd do if you're in windows goto the manufacturers website for the drivers.

Yes. I use it anyway, one hour I can and when it happens I post a tutorial here to serve for other users.

Jeesh, just download and install MX 19.1, which is based on Buster, and run the Nvidia driver installer.

Dells with Optimus of your vintage are known to have a quirky BIOS that may require you to blacklist the nouveau driver in GRUB before installing the Nvidia drivers. After installing them, which ends up blacklisting nouveau for you anyway, if you boot to a Black Screen of Death, you have to then add a known boot tweak to GRUB so that the BIOS emulates a Windows release.

badbanana, if you don't know anything about Optimus laptops and the Nvidia driver in Debian, it's better to remain silent instead of giving advice that will end up with the user unable to get to a GUI. There are zillions of questions here from Optimus owners that tried your approach and then get a black screen after the reboot because the system is trying to using the Nvidia driver on a display it can't access. <masked facepalm>

What kind of battery life and temperatures are you getting using the Nvidia card full time like that?

Also, the Debian Nvidia drivers blacklist nouveau automatically, so you don't need to add that step.

unfortunately just as it worked, I use it like this when I go to play and change it by doing the same procedure for the integrated Intel when I'm not playing. It was hard to find a tutorial that worked for me. It was the only way.

When you say it was the "only way", do you mean you tried other distros that would set up Bumblebee and Nvidia drivers for you, and they failed? Or even the procedure in the Debian wiki for Bumblebee? Because I don't see anything about you trying that.
