[solved]How can you install Tor Browser on Buster?

#1 Post by coco45 »

Is there any way for torbrowser-launcher installation ,as it's not available in synaptic , even after adding buster-backports in etc/apt/source.list
Also through the terminal the message is " no torbrowser package version available but it exist in the database ; this means it's not existing or it exist on another source"?
Synaptic is configured for " buster-backports" , is it OK ?
Note : i have already installed libreoffice version 7 with backports , and it works .
i still continue to configurate my debian with all softs I used with others distros ...

You can grab PI-Apps from: https://github.com/Botspot/pi-apps
I am running the Raspberry PI OS which is based on Buster and has the normal Debian repos including Backports.
It installs Tor Browser 10.0.8 and it runs with no issues. Not sure why it isn't in Buster, probably either no maintainer or mad crazy bugs.
Or you can check the Snap store.

I downloaded tor-browser-linux64-10.0.7_en-US.tar.xz from the Tor site. Then I opened the tarball and cd'd to ~/tor-browser_en-US. Open Browser and click on start-tor-browser. There are instructions on the Tor site. Tor does not need to be installed like other Debian packages.

Yes that is what the PI-Apps does, plus it creates a menu and checks for updates.

Hi,
I just checked. The launcher is in Backports:

Code: Select all

$ rmadison torbrowser-launcher |grep buster
torbrowser-launcher | 0.3.3-3~bpo10+1 | buster-backports/contrib         | source, amd64, i386
DebianStable

Code: Select all

$ vrms

No non-free or contrib packages installed on debian! rms would be proud.
