You can try Debian 11, it is still not released as stable but should work.

The installer did not hang, so it means that the hang is caused by a driver/module which is not used by the installer, such as a graphic driver. What graphic chip(s) does the machine have ? You reported that lspci shows both "VGA controller" and "display controller".
