Hi,
I'm trying to install sarge on a Xeon 64 server using the IA-64 version of Debian
The server won't boot from either CD1 or netinstall CD (Slamd64 cd boots fine).
The documentation on the cd says there are images to make boot floppies in /install/floppy. But /install is empty! Also I can't find these online.
I'm stuck...
thanks,
Anne

no boot floppies for IA-64 ??
Well, as you can see, IA-64 boot floppies are not on the menu. :-( Your options are the Netinstall CD or the Businesscard CD. (I see that the Netboot link is dead.) The links on this page are to the latest daily builds. I don't know where you obtained the CDs that you are presently using, but these might be more recent, meaning that the problem which prevents you from using your CDs might have been corrected. Then again, maybe not.
You've not told us what occurred when you attempted to use your CDs other than to say that they won't boot. That doesn't give us a lot to go on.
The ultimate solution is for you to post to debian-boot mailing list, since those are the people who wrote the installer and will ultimately be the ones to debug it, if in fact you have discovered a bug.

Found the following in the debian-boot mailinglist. It looks like I'm using the wrong archtecture:
IA64 is Itanium processor--not Xeon. You need to be using the amd64
version of debian (which does support the 64 bit Intel processor).
See http://wiki.debian.net/?DebianAMD64Faq and
Q: Is this port only for AMD 64-bit CPUs?
A: No. "amd64" is the name chosen by AMD for their 64-bit architecture.
Before release, it was called "x86_64", and some distributions continue
to use this name. Intel refers to its x86_64 instruction set CPUs as
"EM64T". The architecture is still the same, and Debian amd64 will run
on AMD and Intel x86 processors with 64-bit support. In honor of the
inventing company, AMD, Debian uses the name amd64.
