Installation stops: what is "Not tainted"?

#1 Post by synthetik »

Machine:
Duron 850
512 RAM
40GB HDD Barracuda
Motherboard: Soltek 75KAV
Chipsets: VT8363A (KT-133A) / VT82C686B
No overclocking

Installation: Debian Sarge 3.1

Media 1: Network Install CD
Media 2: CD 1 downloaded through jigdo

Previous OS: Win98

Installation Problems:

1. Using linux26 or expert26, the partitioning process stops at the last partition. I used all available options in bios for hdd (Auto, Manual, CHS); I used different partitioning schemes, but still the process stops at the last partition.

2. Using "linux" (default) or "expert" I get these messages:

Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address 0d005f0c
printing eip:
c012b523
*pde=00000000
Oops: 0002
CPU: 0
EIP: 0010:[c012b523] Not tainted

The last part says:

Panic: Attempted to kill the idle the task!
In idle task - not syncing

Both of the CD's I used gave the same problem. Is there something wrong with my hardware?

Hi,

A follow-up on my post:

I used the same CD's on my other machine (Pentium 2.4) and both worked without a glitch.

On my Duron 850, I tried most options in F5, F6 and F7 but all failed. In F5, I tried "no387" for workaround faulty FPU (old machines) but it stops after 4 lines, the last line says, " Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel". No luck.
