Trouble installing sarge on old laptop, doesn't detect FA411

#1 Post by Tony Goodwin »

So I am doing a floppy/network install of sarge on a Compaq LTE 5300.

I do not effectively have a cd-rom drive (I have one, but it uses the same bay as the floppy, and the system will not boot from cd.)

Therefore, I have downloaded the floppy images, and am trying to install.
It gets to the point of detecting my network hardware, and does not detect my NetGear FA411 pcmcia ethernet card. It is supposed to use the pcnet_cs driver, but even when I manually select that, it still never finds the card.

With no network capabilities, I have no way to download the packages I need.

Any ideas?

does your pcmcia slot work?

you might need to load a module for that first.

How would I do that? Sorry, I am almost Linux-illiterate.

sorry, did not read that carefully enough.

hm, actually i do not know exactly how the floppy install works. i know that if you install via netinstall cd you are asked if you need pcmcia support. most of the pcmcia adapters work with the so called "yenta driver", so if you can choose which modules to load (during install) you should try that one.

sorry that i cannot give more advice, because i never tried the floppies so i do not know the install process :(
