Crying, skulking back to Windows--In command prompt jail

#1 Post by Stankubrick »

I am losing the faith. Got the courage to switch to linux/debian- installed on ibm x86 300gb Maxtor HD. All goes well until asked to software to install (eg- Desktop Environment, Web Server, etc). I can not select anything!!! then if I just hit Enter I get the command prompt. startx does not work. "apt-get install" etc returns "permission denied, are you root?" aren't I root????
please be gentle I am newbie and also a moron.
Thanks

Use the spacebar to select Desktop Environment, Web Server, etc.......

or you can

apt-get install x-window-system-core x-window-system xterm

then

apt-get install gnome-desktop-envirnment

or

apt-get install kde

or

apt-get install xfce4

or

apt-get install fluxbox
