I maybe asked this q first in the wrong place.

The deal is I can run any installer from Ubuntu, Kubuntu or Demudi and the result is the screen clicks and goes blank.

There is an old vid card in there called a Diamond Stealth 200 0pro.

try
debian-installer/framebuffer

Some architectures use the kernel framebuffer to offer installation in a number of languages. If framebuffer causes a problem on your system you can disable the feature by the parameter debian-installer/framebuffer=false. Problem symptoms are error messages about bterm or bogl, a blank screen, or a freeze within a few minutes after starting the install.
have a look at:

I had a look. I didn't understand any of it.

If my boot screen comes up for grub--
which it does under Demudi, there is the
main kernel boot and something called 'rescue mode as the seconf option.

If I get the boot screen on the hard disk (which means I will reinstall it again) and that rescue option is available, what's the syntax and command sequence to:

Fix the GDM problem

save to disk so it doesn't happen again.

See, this all started because I could get a full boot from the Live cd but have all these problems installing the same distro using its
installer version.

Far as the Debian base system installer goes,
I haven't any idea where it could be "interrupted" to do any frame buffer mods.

Wait... before the installation starts for something like Kubuntu, the splash screen comes up. But that is before the long install process starts and then the screen winks out.

So I'm still hung up for knowing what to do.

Whatever the case, there doesn't seem to be any way to force the changes and have them save _before_ the install routine wipes and installs on the disk.
