Install -- exim corrupt on cd, cant download off http/ftp

Sup everyone,

Im installing debian (linux for that matter) for the first time. Usually I'm a bsd /solaris person as it's what i do for work though, recently, i've had this odd itch to check out linux.

So, I'm installing debian, and it's going alright so far. Wish the somewhat gui install was a little more verbose while downloading/installing files, but thats not a big deal.

What i'm having a problem with is this; When installing the base system, I initially picked to install from the CD. It went fine till it tried to install exim, when it hung for a few and then said exim was corrupt and couldnt continue (it sucks you cant bypass that and install it on your own). So, I go back to the main menu and I go to install the base again but this time I pick debian's http mirror to download the files from. Again, it ran fine till it hit exim, where it sat there for a bit and then again, said it failed. This time just saying it couldnt be downloaded.

Is there something up with this? Better yet, is there anyway around it?

It would help if you'd provide us with the exact error messages you get. I think we'll get you some steps further if you post them here.

Btw, I think there's nothing wrong with the verbosity of the Debian installer. But that's offtopic.

at the bottom of the 'Warning' box is an option to 'continue' (its the only option)

so, i hit continue

the next box that comes up is titled 'error' and inside is;

Couldnt download exim

again, the only option is 'continue', so I continue. which brings me back to the main menu where 'Next:' is 'Install the Base System'.

Your failure to get exim both from CD and the net looks pretty mysterious. I have no idea what's going on at the moment. Could you try a recent d-i CD image (if not already doing so), such as the RC2 (Release Candidate 2), which may be downloaded from http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer Note that businesscard iso image requires network access to install the base system, while netinst already contains the base system. Verify the MD5 sums of the image after downloading it (it can be found in MD5SUMS file in download directory). If problem persists, try different mirrors. Personally I find http://ftp.egr.msu.edu and http://archive.progeny.com to be pretty reliable. If you still have problems, post your experiences here.

you know, at first i was thinking it could have something to do with me setting my partitions to ext3 when booting the 2.2 kernel.

when initializing the partitions after booting the 2.2 kernel install it doesnt give you a choice between ext2,3 or reiser(sp?) so i manually set them to ext3 and mounted them.

so i went back and I started the install over again, this time using the 2.4 kernel boot and its still giving me the same problems.

yes indeed, it is pretty weird that both the cd and mirrors are giving me problems. I was just hoping i could figure a way around this without having to download another image.

though, it seems like thats what i'm going to do. I will definately get back to you guys if I have a continuing problem, and if I dont, I'll still get back to close the post with my results.

Ok, if kernel 2.2.x is involved, then you are definitely using the Woody installer, released about 3 (!) years ago. No wonder it fails to download the base system, as the mirrors now contain completely different stuff. I strongly recommend you to retry with the current Sarge installer (see my previous post).

To my understanding, 'Sarge' is still in the testing stage though. 'Woody' is still the stable release right? I'd much rather have stable so I can get decent/up-to-date security patches.

Shouldnt my 'woody' installer still install just fine for woody? Especially if i'm installing base off the cd.

It should. I have the Woody CDs, and I could install exim. Check the image you downloaded, it really should install smoothly. If it doesn't, you should try to download it again.
If all else fails, try not to install exim. Debian depends on a mail transport agent to be installed, but there are more packages providing MTA (smail, sendmail, postfix...).
After the system went up, you can try to download exim from a number of sources.

Yeah. I'm downloading the woody image off another mirror right now. I'll see if that fixes it.

And yeah, I figured there needed to be an MTA installed, but I figured if it failed on exim it should let me continue with the installation and install a different one later but it didnt. After getting the errors, it wouldnt continue installing the base system.

Hopefully this new image will run smoother. I'll be back in a couple hours after its done downloading. *crosses fingers*

excellent.

the image i got off this recent mirror is installing just fine. Other than the fact that its not getting an ip from my dhcp server, but thats ok. Just set it static and i'll fix it later.

anyway, I really appreciate everyone's advice on my issue. hope linux turns out to be as enjoyable as bsd.
