If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/./X0-lock and start again.
Did you try that? If so, what was the error message you got? BTW, are you 100% sure there is no server running on :0?

help me too

I also install woody from a DVD without any problem but I get an error "no sceens found" when I startx. I tried to configure, but I could find suport for my video card GeForce4 Titanium in fact for any GeForce 4. Is there a way to solve this problem? I'm from Romania and the only CD-DVD Debian vendor is out of business or in a long long too long holiday so my intention to purchase sarge or woody r3 or r4 failed.

You can download the drivers for your GeForce from nvidia's site:
www.nvidia.com.
Besides, you don't need support for your GeForce to startx, you can just choose the nv driver.

I did that, I'm not an experienced debian or linux user but that is the choice I made:NV driver but the problem was the same: no screens found.

What exactly did you do? Did you install the drivers from nvidia or did you choose the nv dirver? Anyway, please post the whole error log.

If it's debian's kernel (not a kernel that you compiled) than I doublt there are missing modules...
Could you give the exact error message?
