Squeeze Netinstall USB

Help with issues regarding installation of Debian

Squeeze Netinstall USB

Postby skipperx » 2010-10-27 01:53

I am trying to install Squeeze on a HP mini netbook.

I have been trying to make a USB to netinstall Squeeze and cannot get it right. I cannot get past the message

SYSLINUX 4.02 debian-2010.............. on booting.

I have tried to make the netinstall usb from this
http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEeePC/HowT ... dInstaller

I am also trying to understand this
http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i ... y-flexible

I have also tried using Unetbootin.

Nothing works so far.

Can someone please tell me simple steps to make a workable USB.

Thank you.

I installed Squeeze on an HP mini 110 yesterday using USB. There were some irregularities. I'm not sure if this will help you since what I did to make the USB was similar to what is in your first link. In another Linux installation, as root I did # zcat boot.img.gz > /dev/sdf1 (sdf1 being my USB location) and then copied debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso onto it, as per the instructions in

http://www.debian.org/releases/squeeze/ ... 03.html.en

I used the daily build from October 25.

I take it yours boots but then gets stuck. When I boot with mine the bios for some reason lists two USBs as options for booting. One didn't actually boot and the other did. That gave me a Debian installer menu. If I selected either the regular or the graphical install it froze. I found though that I could install using the option for expert install (I'm no expert). That gave me a Squeeze installation. But so far it has no network connection, though it did for the install, and there are a few other issues. There must be some issues with hardware detection or drivers or configuration in the current installer.

Already tried the "easy way" described in the previous section? Make sure to use the boot.img.gz and the installer images of the same architecture and day, and to extract to the device and not to a partition in it.

Try using unetbootin to create your bootable USB drive. It's as simple as selecting the netinst .iso and pointing it at the USB drive.

I got it working. I used these
viewtopic.php?f=10&t=52856&start=15
viewtopic.php?f=10&t=53256#p307103

Basically use UNetBootin with a little adjustment. I installed Squeeze with netinstall. It went from the beginning to the end without a glitch, not a single error message. I did partition the drive the way i wanted with GParted on a stick before. But i am not sure if made any difference.
