Squeeze under XenServer 5.6.0?

Postby Sephiroth » 2010-12-13 14:47

Are there any special steps I'd need to take to install Squeeze AMD64 on a server with two quad-core Xeons? I had no issues installing Server 2003 x64 and XP Pro x64 on the box, but I seem to remember seeing something somewhere about XenServer in the kernel images.

What, nobody here has gone enterprise-level with Squeeze? I'm looking to virtualize via XenServer to simplify my life at this client. They're willing to buy a box if I can get this working in a test environment. I am in the process of zeroing out my old RAID0 array on my PowerEdge now and preparing to install XS for this purpose. I'd like some advice on this. Basically, do I need to use a Squeeze XS kernel or will a stock one work like in Windows?

My knowledge of XenServer ends where the differences between it and Xen begin. With that in mind, I believe there should be no difference between running 2.6.32-*-xen (or later) or any other kernel packaged by Debian within a DomU.

Of course, using a kernel deployed within a DomU under Xen requires configuration of pygrub or similar. I wouldn't be surprised if this was a non-issue under XenServer.

Does Squeeze offer a network installation using the Xen kernel? I have the x86 and x86_64 network installs, but not one with the Xen kernel.

There is no form of official Debian installer with linux-image-xen-* as the default kernel that I'm aware of. If you're installing a DomU, don't worry about it: the *-xen-* kernels are designed for the Dom0; there's no advantage to using them on a DomU. Paravirtualisation will work out-of-the-box from 2.6.32 onwards and I'm confident any problems will be unrelated to the kernel used on the guest.

Though if you really want to use a xen kernel, you can still chroot in and swap the kernels over or install it once booted.
