Could you paste your /var/log/Xorg.0.log?

that file is empty, no contents inside

i've reinstalled it 3 times since last night, , all with the same result: X windows won't start.

in between, I also tried Lenny 5.08 XFDE netinstall , everything seems fine

i have a seperate partition(ext3) /home, carried over from previous Ubuntu installation, boot partition / is reformatted as ext4 journaling system during Debian 6.0 installation.

hi, again

I deleted every hidden directory/files in my home directory by using this command
# rm –rf .??*

and rebooted the machine.

this time it generated a huge Xorg.0.log file, 49065984 in size, i don't know how to copy it over to my usb thumbdrive and transferred to my laptop from command prompt, but here's the last several lines of that file:

# tail Xorg.0.log
(EE) R128(0): Idle timed out, resetting engine...
....
(EE) R128(0): Idle timed out, resetting engine...
(EE) R128(0): R128CCEWaitForIdle: CCE stop -9
(EE) R128(0): R128CCEWaitForIdle: CCE start -9
(EE) R128(0): R128CCEWaitForIdle: CCE idle -9
(EE) R128(0): Idle timed out, resetting engine...
(EEroot@debian:/var/log#

these lines repeat forever in Xorg.0.log file

You have an ATI video card that need special drivers. Some where close to the top of the file it will say Loading Module.

Code: Select all
(II) LoadModule: "nvidia"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.so
(II) Module nvidia: vendor="NVIDIA Corporation"
        compiled for 4.0.2, module version = 1.0.0
        Module class: X.Org Video Driver
(II) NVIDIA dlloader X Driver  260.19.29  Wed Dec  8 12:10:14 PST 2010
(II) NVIDIA Unified Driver for all Supported NVIDIA GPUs

Very similar to this but will have your video card listed. It may not be loading the correct driver. Do you have an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.

I don't have /etc/X11/xorg.conf file in the system, how can i get the correct module?

I tried both Debian Lenny and Linux Mint 9 on the same machine since encountered the problem yesterday, they all load into X-windows without a hitch, does that mean Debian drop the support for ATI Rage 128 card in the new release?

http://wiki.debian.org/AtiHowTo

http://wiki.debian.org/ATIProprietary

One of those two links should get you head in the right direction. If ATI is like nVidia then there are several way to install drivers.

If you need an /etc/X11/xorg.conf you can find an example here. /usr/share/doc/xserver-xorg/examples/xorg.conf

You might want to try install firmware-linux-nonfree.

solved :D

i downloaded the nonfree firmware for ATI cards and created a copy of /etc/X11/xorg.conf with this field:

Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Technologies Inc Rage 128 PF/PRO AGP 4x TMDS"
Driver "ati"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

as of now, I'm typing from my new Debian 6.0 Squeeze desktop.

thanks for the help, guys! you both rock! :)
