P.S. By the way, when your post includes chunks of code from the terminal, or if you edit it, please just use the mouse to select the text and then click on the fifth tab along, the code tab above the window so that the post occupies lest space and can be scrolled.

Hi. Thanks for that kedaha. I'll try that next time. Still having major problems though.

Half way through the updates finally running ok, there was some kind of serious disk error. Starting again did not help. So, once more, with feeling. A reinstall. That all went smoothly enough, I thought. But when I went to boot for the first time, I got these errors:

Code: Select all

can't access job control tty turned off

mounting /sys on /root/sys no such file or directory

target filesystem doesn't have requested /sbin/init
I turned the computer off and started again, but got the same error. So. Once again, another install. I imagine I must have missed a step in the install. But I don't at all understand what I did wrong. I thought I did everything the same as last time. When it finishes, and I get a huge list of things I can do, what do I *have* to do?

Hi. Thanks everyone.

Code edited as requested.

I think what I did wrong last time was put in a domain name when it asked for it. I did not do that before, and I thought perhaps that was where I was going wrong. But I think that messed it up. A bit of instruction on that screen about why and when you would want to put in a domain name might be a good idea.

So. I did one more reinstall, and it all works ok, but only after I put in all the edits that kedaha told me to do. I did try setting the domain server to the uk server, but that made no difference at all. only when I edited the files as instructed do I get connected to the net for updates.

I guess all's well that ends well, but I am mightily puzzled about why the standard install requires that I edit these files when I have finished. Clearly this is not for the naive user! I don't think I would have got through this if I had not had a few years of training on ubuntu so I knew how to do commands and so on.

Well, I spoke too soon again. I am not getting all of the right connections. I have tried Main Server, US Server and UK Server, but all give errors.

Code: Select all

W: Failed to fetch http://ftp.gb.debian.org/debian/dists/squeeze/updates/Release.gpg Could not resolve 'ftp.gb.debian.org'

W: Failed to fetch http://ftp.uss.debian.org/debian/dists/squeeze-updates/Release.gpg Could not resolve 'ftp.uss.debian.org'

W: Failed to fetch http://ftp.uss.debian.org/debian/dists/squeeze-updates/main/i18n/Translation-en.bz2 Could not resolve 'ftp.uss.debian.org'

W: Failed to fetch http://ftp.uss.debian.org/debian/dists/squeeze-updates/main/i18n/Translation-en_GB.bz2 Could not resolve 'ftp.uss.debian.org'

W: Failed to fetch http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dists/squeeze-updates/main/source/Sources.gz 404 Not Found

W: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
This was all working perfectly before, on one of the previous installs, so I have absolutely no idea what is going wrong.

I had the same problem, it was my dns, this is what I get adviced:

1.- edit your file /etc/resolv.conf, you should see something like:

Code: Select all

domain some.crap
search some.crap
nameserver nicenumbers
2.- comment everything:

Code: Select all

# domain some.crap
# search some.crap
# nameserver nicenumbers
3.- Go to free dns server and pick one, I use 8.8.8.8 :)

4.- Use it on your /etc/resolv.conf, you may go sudo on this:

Code: Select all

# domain some.crap
# search some.crap
# nameserver nicenumbers
nameserver 8.8.8.8
5.- save on try again aptitude update

6.- If that worked, then...

7.- sudo chattr +i /etc/resolv.conf, to avoid external programs edit the file.

8.- hope it helps like it helped me.

Regarding the incorrect screen resolution during installation, please note that there is a Help option in the initial boot menu for details about setting a more suitable boot parameter, for example vga=771.
If you now have a working system, there is, as before, no need to reinstall to solve a few trivial issues.
There is no need to add a domain name if you have no domain.
What does your sources list look like now?:
cat /etc/apt/sources.list
After changing the sources, did you run the command aptitude update or apt-get update?
triplemaya wrote:Ubuntu is much much simpler than all this!! (I'm trying to migrate from ubuntu, but maybe I am just not clever enough for debian!)
Well, a little time and patience help so please consult the Installation Guide, the wiki and also see Absent Minded's post.
Thanks for editing the thread to wrap the terminal stuff in code blocks.

Hi. I don't know if this makes any sense, but after experimenting it seems as if setting

Code: Select all

[main]
plugins=ifupdown,keyfile

[ifupdown]
managed=true
to

Code: Select all

[main]
plugins=ifupdown,keyfile

[ifupdown]
managed=false
allows me to get updates, but I have to reverse this in order to install software from the repos.

To answer your question about /etc/apt/sources.list, I went to Debian sources generator and got this

Code: Select all

#############################################################
################### OFFICIAL DEBIAN REPOS ###################
#############################################################

###### Debian Main Repos
deb http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main contrib non-free

###### Debian Update Repos
deb http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/updates main contrib non-free

which seemed to simplify things.

This configuration means the device isn't managed by Network manager. What kind of computer is it? If it's a desktop computer and you only connect using a wired Ethernet connection this is fine. If it is a laptop and you also wish to configure WIFI for use with network Manager for mobile use, then you might wish to configure it as described in Wired_Networks_are_Unmanaged for both wired and wireless use. You don't actually need Network Manager at all if you always use the same connection, either wired or wireless. The network gets configured during installation and that's that.

Hi. Thanks.

the #'s are of course not my idea!

I was wrong about sources.list, whichever way I set the sources.list I get a slew of error messages with aptitude update. So I have left it as false as this is a desktop.

I have tried various different servers, including doing a 'select best server', which used to sporadically fix this problem in ubuntu, but it seems to be more persistent in debian for some reason. Though there seem to be less with the latest server:

And with update manager I get the same kind of array of errors I posted previously.

But I managed to install all of the software I wanted with apt-get.

So everything works, but I am concerned about future updates. Especially as I don't think I ever managed to get the usual blizzard of updates I think of as normal after a fresh install.

When I run the updates manager I get this list of errors

Try my sources list and later switch to another mirror: no errors on my system.

Code: Select all

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main

# squeeze-updates, previously known as 'volatile'

DebianStable

Code: Select all

Thanks. This seems to do a lot better.

The update manager runs without errors. But at the end it suggests an update to tzdata, and when I ok this I get a popup:

And I went back and installed your sources.list, and the update manager gives me the short list of errors, but now tzdata needs updating again.

The sources list I posted works here flawlessly. There can occasionally be minor interruptions.

If you wish to install the latest opera via Synaptic, remove the old source and consult this page:

Good metaphor but one can enjoy the sunshine with Debian Stable because their aren't any blizzards but you can install whatever.

If you wish you can also add further contrib and non-free entries to your /etc/apt/sources.list and comment out the deb-src sources with a #:
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main contrib non-free
# deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main
deb http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/updates main contrib non-free
# deb-src http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/updates main

# squeeze-updates, previously known as 'volatile'
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ squeeze-updates main contrib non-free
# deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ squeeze-updates main
DebianStable

Code: Select all

$ vrms

No non-free or contrib packages installed on debian! rms would be proud.

So I gather everything's fine.

Many thanks for everything. I'll alter the sources as you suggest.

Best wishes for a happy summer.
