win 7 stopped booting after installing debian
win 7 stopped booting after installing debian
Hello, I have two hard drives, on my first hdd I have win 7, on the second hdd I have win xp and debian.
Before installing debian everything was working good. I would go to the bios and would choose to boot from first hard drive(win 7) or second hard drive (win xp). Then I installed debian on the second hdd and win 7 stopped booting.
If I go to the bios and choose to boot from second hard drive, GRUB would let me choose either win xp or debian, but if I go to the bios and choose to boot from first hard drive (win 7), windows 7 won't boot.
Windows 7 only boots when the second hard drive is unplugged.
This is what happens when the second hard drive is connected.
I tried to repair the mbr and reinstalled windows 7, but that didn't fix it.
It only boots when the second hard drive(xp and debian) is disconnected.
I hope you can help me fix this problem.
Thanks in advance.

Re: win 7 stopped booting after installing debian
It won't work since the windows 7 boot manager is not on the MBR, Windows 7 is installed on a GPT disk

Re: win 7 stopped booting after installing debian
The GPT is the 'new' MBR. Do the search and type GPT instead of MBR.

I already did that, I repaired the boot manager and reinstalled windows 7, but it doesn't work. It only works when the second hard drive is disconnected.ArisVer wrote:The GPT is the 'new' MBR. Do the search and type GPT instead of MBR.

Re: win 7 stopped booting after installing debian
One way is to boot into Debian and install Grub on your Windows7 disk. I DO NOT KNOW if Windows7 likes Grub as its bootloader and I do not know if it goes back and rewrites its own bootloader. If you gonna do any testing do it while the system is freshly installed.

Re: win 7 stopped booting after installing debian
Please boot debian and open terminal and execute
and type root password to get root privilege
and post the result.
Or, download boot info script and unzip it and execute it and post the contents of RESULTS.txt.
boot info script
http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net/
I wonder if the following solves your problem.
with root privilege and booting with second HDD and select Windows 7 at grub2 menu.
Code: Select all
su
Code: Select all
dd if=/dev/sda bs=512 count=1 2>/dev/null|hd
Or, download boot info script and unzip it and execute it and post the contents of RESULTS.txt.

30_os-prober does not work. He may be lazy or powerless.
How about disabling second HDD at BIOS configuration when you boot Windows 7?
I do not know well about boot of Windows 7.
The Guru who knows well about boot of Windows 7 may check the forum for Windows (7) rather than this Debian forum.
If you dare to enable second HDD at BIOS configuration when you boot Windows 7, read the following.
Similar error messages are shown at many occasions.
http://www.google.co.jp/search?hl=ja&so ... 0.5.5l10l0
Your first HDD has Guid Partition Table (GPT) and so, part_gpt should be loaded to enable GRUB2 to deal the first HDD.
I am not familiar with use of GRUB2 and GPT and (U)EFI.
The following link may be useful.

At BIOS, select the second HDD where Windows XP and Debian are installed.
At Grub2 menu, press "c" key to enter into Grub2 command line.
At Grub2 command line, execute the following
and find
(hd*,msdos1) and (hd*,msdos2) and (hd*,msdos3)
* is 0 or 1, I guess.
If * is 1,
If there is
efi
then,
If there is not
efi
then
If there is
bootmgr
then
drivemap.mod may be used to change the order of the HDDs.
To disable a partition (hd0,msdos1),
I am not sure if there is a command which disable a whole HDD in Grub2.

Re: win 7 stopped booting after installing debian
At boot, GRUB2 tries to find configuration file /boot/grub/grub.cfg.farahon wrote:Can you tell me what "30_os-prober" is, please?
/boot/grub/grub.cfg is generated by "grub-mkconfig" (called also by "update-grub") which executes the files in /etc/grub.d/ directory.
In /etc/grub.d/ directory, there is 30_os-prober, which execute "os-prober".
I think os-prober tries to find the other OS's in the other partitions.
You can read the code of os-prober by
Code: Select all
more $(which os-prober)
Really? ..... What a bad BIOS!farahon wrote:There's no option to disable the second HDD at bios, I guess I'll have to unplug it everytime I want to boot windows 7
Is there any place showing FIRST HDD or so? If the setting is "AUTO", please select "None" or "Disabled" or "Not selected" and so on.

I found the following URL which may relate to your problem, although I am not sure.

Re: win 7 stopped booting after installing debian
I was reading those posts, but they didn't solve my problem. I think I'm just going to unplug the hard drive.
Thank you for taking the time to help me fix it. I really appreciate it.

Re: win 7 stopped booting after installing debian
I have ONE MBR disk with win7, xp and debian on it.
Works fine, But I use a bootmanager
First I used OSL2000 bootmanager, a good one, but the support is bad. Ore more specific, no support.
Now I switched to MR Booter (Master Booter) Perfect to me. (there are more bootmanagers)
If win 7 is booted, xp is hidden. Ore if XP is booted, win 7 is hidden.
Hiding debian is possible to, but not necessary.
Only grub is NOT installed in de MBR but on dev/sdaX during installation.
Grub can be moved with the super grub CD http://supergrub.forjamari.linex.org/
If you have troubles booting win 7 connecting 2 drives, maybe BCDEDIT helps. You can manage your bootfile with it.
If you understand Dutch, I would advice this page to read: http://www.schoonepc.nl/instal/multibt.html, but in the right corner you can switch to English.
I hope this is helpful.
