I had a bit of a trauma getting my nic to work until I noticed a 2.6 kernel on the disc. Maybe a kernel choice option in the install procedure?

Please be a bit more specific. You effectively said nothing, so we can't answer to that.
What kind of NIC do you have? What kind of "trauma" do you have, exactly?
