Where is Etch?

#1 Post by jimbo-62 »

I have been away from the computer for the last few weeks. Today, I am back and decided to try the latest Etch build, netinstall version. The dates on the most recent builds is June 3! Sarge was released on June 6th.

Can anyone please explain what is going on?

Thanks, jimbo

Jup, etch is on the mirrors, but daily/weekly builds of the installer haven't resumed yet. Install sarge andupgrade to etch by changing your sources.list and upgrading.

OK, I downloaded two iso files:

debian-31r0a-i386-netinst.iso

debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso Dated June 3, 2005

I assume the first is Sarge. Anyway, when I installed I used the stable version from the mirror for downloads.

I guess the "testing" download is the same as the first since it is dated June 3 and Sarge was released June 6th? Anyway, when I install from this iso should I just download the testing version from the mirror? And then in the future keep updating testing versions to be sure I have "Etch"?

Thanks for any additional insight.

just modify your http/ftp mirror in /etc/apt/sources.list

changing from "stable" to "testing" or "unstable"

then apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade

and will be switched from the stable sarge to the unstable etch ...

??? but it should't be called sid???

sid will always be the unstable version, even when etch will be the new stable.

In that case a new name will be taken for the testing version.
