New kernel update behavior? - Not really

#1 Post by CwF »

Maybe I was moving to fast, maybe I didn't see it right...
This morning I updated 2 bullseye hopefuls and saw a new kernel tagged for upgrade. Proceeded, and did some other minor work and rebooted, expecting to check the new kernel and remove the old one...
I didn't need to! There is only one kernel installed..?

So I checked the history...5.10.24-1 to 5.10.26-1. Sure enough, it happened!

Interesting. No complaints and it's working fine.
I'm used to cleaning out the old manually. The subject has come up here many times, often in an 'out of space' thread where multiple old kernels are still hanging out. So, if people feel more comfortable with a fallback kernel - that might be a manual thing now.

There was no ABI change between 5.10.24-1 and 5.10.26-1. So the update did not bring a new kernel-image package, just a new version of the current kernel package which replaces the previous version, as any other package upgrade does.

I'm one of those users who keeps a fallback kernel. It's good to have when things go south.

It is a good idea, but I only keep one kernel since the backup never comes into play. Being image based there is never the need.

5.10.28 coming down from Sid will bump the ABI to 6, though.
