currently, I am running Debian 9 - Stretch with LXDE
this used to be a FrankenDebian installation, which I repaired
in fact, I am happy with my current Debian-machine.

later this year, Debian Buster is coming up.
so, I started testing on a virtual machine in Parallels Desktop
I installed Debian Stretch, changed /etc/apt/sources.list and upgraded to Buster.
that went quite well.
than, I found Debian Busrter RC1, which I installed with LXDE
in this installation, I installed LXQt and purged LXDE
no problem there either
finally, I installed Debian Buster RC1 with LXQt
this gives a problem, as LXQt does not come up
in fact, the home folder does not have the usual folders

as you can see, there is no .cache, .config, .local, etc.etc.

it is not a real problem for me, but I am just curious.

I think this could be the same problem as I have encountered with graphical desktop not starting after a fresh install (happened with Xfce, Lxqt and a couple of others but not Gnome) and my workaround was to create an xorg.conf file, I have outlined how I did mine in this post it might work for you too.

the complaint is "cannot find Xorg"
not even when I made it "/usr/bin/Xorg -configure"

Did you install xorg and mesa metapackages?
Maybe they aren't pulled in by default. You need them for LXQt DE, along with lightdm display manager.
So, from Debian minimal install: EDIT: Yeah, mesa package exists on Arch, but not on Debian. Anyway, installing xorg will pull in mesa packages. Fixed.

mesa and lightdm were not installed.
did install lightdm and it now works

there is no "mesa", but there are several other mesa's, like:
mesa-va-drivers
mesa-vdpau-drivers
those were installed.

The xorg metapackage is a dependency of the task-desktop package, which is pulled in by task-lxqt-desktop.

If the OP's problem is fixed then it must have been caused by SDDM.

@OP: does GDM work? That runs X as the normal user but LightDM (and SDDM) runs X as root, which is bad.

after installing lightdm, it worked
next I found I also had SDDM, which I purged
and it still works, so apparently lightdm is the active display manager.

I am suggesting getting rid of LightDM and using GDM instead.

keeping myself busy, I came across Cinnamon desktop.
looks very good, but not really light weight.
but, you can adjust the cursor-size.
being used to LXDE, I tried to find a bigger cursor there.
everything on internet about this, is years old.
downloaded cursor-themes don't install, etc.etc.

so, how do I get a bigger cursor in a light weight desktop ??

currently I have 3 Debian machines.
one of them is a small media-server, running Debian Stretch.
trying to learn more and more about Buster, I also have 2 virtual machines in Parallels Desktop.
one is Stretch, the other is Buster RC1 and both VM's are newly installed with Cinnamon and gdm3

what I found yesterday, is that in my Stretch-VM, I double-click on the Network icon on the Desktop.
next I see my Debian media-server, my Buster-VM and an icon for Windows-network.
going into the Windows-network, gives me Workgroup, and in there there is my Debian media-server.

doing the same in my Buster-VM, gives a different result.
when I open the Network-icon, I get the icon of the Buster-VM and an icon for Windows-network.
I would expect my Stretch-VM here as well.
double-clicking on Windows-network does not give me Workgroup, just an empty view.

both VM's have been installed exactly the same, no changes made to any network-settings.
both have Samba installed and the service smbd is running on both.
I can ping both VM's back and forth, as well as my Debian media-server.

what could be going on here ??

in my Buster-VM, I have not added a file /etc/apt/02periodic
so, I would not expect Buster to update the package-list by itself, but it does.
it has happened several times, that when I start Buster up and run "sudo apt upgrade", after say 5 minutes, there are upgrades. sometimes, I also see a notification window, saying that some packages can be upgraded.

is this a new behaviour in Buster ??

Not really, unattended-upgrades was installed and enabled by default in the GNOME desktop for stretch but only for packages from the Security Team.

For buster the upgrades are enabled for all packages:

yes, but I purged the package unattended-upgrades

Check I think it's apt-daily.timer & apt-daily-upgrade.timer
