******KEEP GTK1!!!!!!******

#1 Post by lolanoob »

Just because GTK1 is no longer developed doesn't mean applications based on it aren't! Also GTK2 is buggy, bloated, and ugly(-er than GTK1). GTK2 apps are also memory and CPU hogs (if you don't believe me, try running the newest GIMP on a P][ with 256MB RAM). And I'm sure we all want XMMS back after the whole audacious 1.5.1-1 fiasco. :(

If an application isn't recompiled for use with GTK2, odds are it's deprecated. However, for those who insist on using the older tool kit, a simple compatibility layer should suffice.

I fully agree, except in (somewhat) the case of XMMS.

Runs ok on mine too, even though they hog up memory. GTK1 works better, though .

It CAN be compiled with GTK support, but it's not necessary.

The rest of the apps I don't use. Goodbye GTK1! Welcome to the 21st century! :)

As for GSNES9x, ZSNES has and will always be better.

Also, since you had the time to go through and find all of those, find me 2 that have had a update from upstream in the past 2 years. (not a Debian revision and not XMMS. XMMS is worse than dead and even the developers admit it)

I acknowledge this, I tried using GSNES9x once, and it sucked  .

Not really the topic, but you should give Snes9x-GTK a try: http://www.snes9x.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=3703

The source is available. Have at it!
If your going to be running GIMP on a P2, you might want to try visiting the outside world some time. Or maybe get a paper route. Decent computers are on the cheap these days.
Welcome to wonderful, wacky, never-dull world of free and open source software, where in spite of all the posturing and debate, the answer is always best couched in code. -Linus T.

I still use SoundTracker, but it’s not a Debian package anymore, which makes the installation unneccessarily complicated. Furthermore, I have to use the GTK 2 port of SoundTracker which is both buggy and slow thanks to GTK 2. I’m quite angry about the situation.

It was the first edition of GTK, obviously. Horrible looking by today's standards. It's like shouting out on a Windows forum "Bring back 3.1!"

Most "improvments" offered buy newer tool kits are cosmetic with minor improvments in functionality. Of course I use icewm, openbox or windowlab with roxfiler so maybe I just don't see it

I have an usb install of RLSD and very good it is to. Anyone wanting to see a retro environment take a look

Isn't that the point of a toolkit -- to provide cosmetic fripperies?

Or am I missing something?

Probably the latter as I use DWM...

AFAIUI, the GNOME team works hard to *reduce* functionality with each new release.
