What's on about sid during testing's freeze?

My interpretation from Lenny's freeze announcement is that, although major changes in sid are not forbidden, they are strongly discouraged. On the other hand, someone suggested (second post) that the freeze may last for up to almost a year.

So, will updates in sid be crawling for almost one year? :-( I will not use experimental as a remedy, I am not crazy :-)

During the last freeze Sid chugged along just fine. Maybe a little slower then normal, but I don't remember anything getting noticeably out of date.

Maybe a little slower then normal,
That's not how I remember it. Sid dies during the Testing freeze. Both Sarge and Etch's freeze periods represent my occasional dips into Experimental.

I could be remembering wrong. I wasn't paying real close attention to the differences at the time. I wonder if there's a way to get hard data on this. It's certainly not life or death, but it would be interesting to see just how much unstable and testing diverge during a freeze.

I wouldn't worry too much about what some random guy writes in his blog. Stick to the official announcements.

The number of bugs doesn't matter - most aren't very complicated to fix.

It wasn't just "some random guy." It was a DD, or at least someone whose blog gets picked up by Debian Planet. Both Sarge and Etch had "things" going on that delayed the release well beyond the stated goals. Maybe that won't happen with Lenny. Maybe the world will live in peace ... My guess, January.

Ok then... a random DD...
But you're right. Maybe they'll pull a "Dunc-tank" again... just to speed things up :P

The "random DD," Bastian Venthur, is holding to his June 2009 prediction. I'm holding to my January prediction, as well. Only difference is that mine was pulled pretty much from thin air, and his is supported by a fancy graph.

Right this moment, the top link at Planet Debian has a somewhat more optimistic spin on the number of bugs. Here's the post: http://blog.schmehl.info/Debian/releasing-lenny-2

That guy (Alexander Reichle-Schmehl) is a newlywed. Everything looks good to him. Isn't he also the one in charge of the Debian Project News. That's overdue as well.

I envy her, or him... Imagine, a life partner that can maintain his/ her own Debian system *sigh*

I don't know. I mean a division of labor is a good thing. I do all the computer work, and that keeps me from dealing with the checkbook. I'm good with that.

Experimental is usually a lot more stable when sid is frozen (obviously you would not do a blind upgrade, but most new versions are still being packaged and that's the only place to put them right now.)

There actually is a pool in #debian:
20:24 -!- Irssi: Starting query in freenode with dpkg
20:24 <dmoerner> lenny pool
20:24 <dpkg> lenny pool is, like, Come and bet on when Lenny will be released. Ask
me about "listkeys lenny pool" to find all of the bets, and "lenny
bet" to find out how to bet.
20:24 <dmoerner> lenny bet
20:24 <dpkg> to add a bet to the lenny pool, /msg dpkg lenny pool 2 =~ s/!/!
<nick>=yyyy-mm-dd/ and when lenny pool 2 is filled create lenny pool 3
and update this factoid.
20:24 <dmoerner> listkeys lenny pool
20:24 <dpkg> Factoid search of 'lenny pool' by key (2): lenny pool 1 ;; lenny pool.
20:25 <dmoerner> lenny pool 1
20:25 <dpkg> extra, extra, read all about it, lenny pool 1 is ! rektide=2008-08-21
