Is this a correct sources.list for a debian upgrade from lenny to sid?

Code: Select all

#
# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 5.0.0 _Lenny_ - Official amd64 NETINST Binary-1 2$

#deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 5.0.0 _Lenny_ - Official amd64 NETINST Binary-1 20$

deb http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ sid main
deb-src http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ sid main

deb http://security.debian.org/ sid/updates main
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ sid/updates main

deb http://volatile.debian.org/debian-volatile sid/volatile main
deb-src http://volatile.debian.org/debian-volatile sid/volatile main
deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ experimental main
deb-src http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ experimental main

I am getting this error from a reload of synaptic;

Code: Select all

as far i know there are no security updates and volatile updates for testing and unstable
(besides the ones added by the developers of the software).
so mine looks like this (in virtualbox :-) ):

deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ sid main
deb-src http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ sid main
deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ experimental main
deb-src http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ experimental main

but i don`t know how to handle:
deb http://www.multimedia-debian.org/debian " sid ?" main

btw: why do you have got different mirror locations, uk and de?
greetings

get rid of volatile and security. All updates (including those) start in sid, so they're simply not needed. sid is volatile enough on it's own and security takes elements from sid packages (either specific patches or the entire package) to generate security updates for stable.

http://linuxsig.org/files/debian-sources.list

# /etc/apt/sources.list
#
# As written, this file will give you a Debian system running the "stable"
# distribution, but allow you to install specific packages from the "testing"
# and "unstable" distributions by giving the "-t <testing|unstable>" flag to
# apt-get install.
#
# To run a "testing" system, comment out the lines in the "STABLE" section,
# as well as any lines marked "Stable" in the "EXTERNAL SOURCES" section.
#
# To run an "unstable" system, comment out the lines in both the "STABLE" and
# "TESTING" sections, as well as any lines marked "Stable" or "Testing" in
# the "EXTERNAL SOURCES" section.
#
# This file was designed for i386 packages and may need to be tweaked for
# other architectures, particularly the "EXTERNAL SOURCES" section.

You can use apt-spy to get the fastest servers in your area. Just do:

How to install apt-spy

Code:

apt-get update
apt-get install apt-spy
apt-spy update
apt-spy -d unstable -s GB

Where "unstable" above is the version of Debian you want. You can also use "testing" or "stable". "GB" is the two letter country code. In my case, I use "US". That will search all servers in that country and check their speed. Afterwards, apt-spy will create a new sources.list file using the fastest server it finds.

Rather than restricting it to one country, you can also serch by geographical area:
Code:

apt-spy -d unstable -a Europe

So that it will search all servers in Europe.

It takes a long time to benchmark all the servers, but it does find the fastest one. In my case, it sped up my average download speed by 3 times by switching servers. You can get more information from "man apt-spy" or "apt-spy --help". Good Luck!

Doing a little digging here... curious... for unstable you have both http://http.us.debian.org/ and http://mirrors.kernel.org/. Why do you need both? If they're mirrors won't they all contain the same packages? If not, how does apt-get know to go to one over the other when the unstable main contrib non-free specifiers are all the same?

BTW... thanks for the apt-spy tip. My goodness that makes a difference!
