Windows XP and Wheezy - update, april 15 - solved

#1 Post by pagat »

I have been using dual-booting: winXP and Debian Linux about 4 years.
When I updated wheezy yesterday or the day before, happened to me a someting unexpected.

I CAN'T boot to Windows XP anymore, because there is no windows line in my grub bootloader.

So, anybody, what should I do.
Is there any chance to boot into windows XP again.

Becauce I am using company's laptop, of course, I do NOT have admin rights for Windows and I do not have boot disk.

I can't remember the details but the subject has come up several times. Search the site for grub. Also search the Internet. A grub rescue disk might help.

I followed the link above.
just in case I re-installed os-prober and grub2
root@~#os-prober
/dev/sda1:Microsoft Windows XP Professional:Windows:chain

root@~# update-grub2
Generating grub.cfg ...
Found background image: /usr/share/images/desktop-base/desktop-grub.png
Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-4-686-pae
Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-3.2.0-4-686-pae
Found memtest86+ image: /boot/memtest86+.bin
Found memtest86+ multiboot image: /boot/memtest86+_multiboot.bin
Found Microsoft Windows XP Professional on /dev/sda1

so you can see grub found WinXP so, therefore no need for more ....
I just restart my computer and there it is WindowsXP- line again

thank you

Same thing happened me - only noticed it today - checked apt logs and it looks like various grub 1.99-27+deb7u2 packages were updated to my system on 26 april - presumably grub rebuild must not have picked up windows partition ?.

Code: Select all

os-prober
update-grub
as per suggested thread above worked for me . I'm new to Debian Wheezy/revisiting Linux and this is certainly proving a learning experience ( not to mention remembering to "count to ten" before panicking  )

I think the latest "update" to 7.5 does this. Happened to me too. Windows 7 disappeared, update-grub2 and voila it's back.
