Although Debian has received quite a lot of flack for maintaining Gnome3 as the default DE, I read that funtoo has been able to bypass its systemd dependencies (taken from this thread on gentoo forums). Many Debian users seem keen on resisting systemd -- ie, edbarx has been courageously working around its superfluous features -- so I wonder if we can look to this project for guidance, or at least a sheen of hope.
Specifically, I wonder if this systemd-less Gnome may be an appropriate, if not forseeable, path for the future of Debian. I'm really not skilled enough to discuss this in-depth, so I leave it up to the community to speculate, tinker, etc.

Gnome minus systemd

Software lock-ins and lock-outs only work in the situation where the source is inaccessible and closed. Thanks to the OP for supporting me psychologically: although it is usually considered an insignificant help, it is far more than that.
I repeat for the infinite time, having a liberal license together with open source, is the key to software freedom and real evolution beyond all myopic corporate interests.
If a private entity, whoever that happen to be, wants to effect software lock-ins and lock-outs on its clients, it has to create it is own source: relying on an existing infrastructure that was created with a diametrically opposite scope, amounts to treachery and dishonesty.

It is hard to get away from CLI tools.
