Where will you go after systemd?

Postby twoflowers » 2014-11-23 21:47

So, after systemd schism I'd like to read from those opting here viewtopic.php?f=20&t=118329 to leave Debian: Where will you go?

There are basically two deterrents in my case. The first one, is I don't want to use installers to install my operating systems, and the second, is I want use a distribution with dependency resolution and similar to Debian. This means, most probably, I will stay here, unless debianfork do provide an option. I hope, although I am not totally confident, that I should be able to do the necessary modifications for the software I use. Till now, I succeeded to do some changes in sysvinit to move it to a separate directory, which is almost nothing, compared to other more demanding changes.

It seems, if surgeons next January do not find a terminal cancer, my retirement will be one full of C/C++ code tinkering. I learnt of appalling stories, of people who were repeatedly tested for cancer, with tests repeatedly indicating the absence of cancer, but at the end, the monster showed its fearful horns, and it was their demise... :(

The worst infection of all, is a false sense of security!
It is hard to get away from CLI tools.

I'll tell you where I'll go.

First, I'm going to go to this page.

http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Pre ... stallation

Then I'm going to go to

/etc/apt/preferences

Then I'm going to tack to the wall with

Code: Select all
#screwyoud

Package: systemd
Pin: origin *
Pin-Priority: -100

Package: systemd-sysv
Pin: origin *
Pin-Priority: -100

Package: libpam-systemd
Pin: origin *
Pin-Priority: -100

Package: systemd*
Pin: origin *
Pin-Priority: -100

That's how I'm voting.

Systemd is asking to come in.

And I'm saying no.

If this breaks my system, then I'm reporting systemd as a bug.

Should have an undecided option in the poll. Why should I commit now when the decision won't have to be made for many months.
May the FORK be with you!

Argh! Added that option, but all votes got reset to zero! Could you please place your votes again?

I'm still staying with a debian derivative (antiX) and running it (sid repos) without systemd (except libsystemd0 which doesn't seem to be doing any harm, at the moment)
antiX with runit - lean and mean.

You really should include an option in the poll for those who wish to use Jessie with systemd, just to be fair. There are some folks who will happily march on with Systemd in their lives, afterall, and we really should be taking metrics on this. I, for one, would really like to know how many folks are happy to run Systemd in Debian.

Maybe OpenBSD or FreeBSD as a last resort.

I'll probably try to stick with Debian first and give systemd a try. If it's as problematic as I hear, Debian and not allowing systemd to be installed seems like a good idea to try out too like a couple of you said.

So... Undecided!

I think that I am going to go with Gentoo. I find FreeBSD interesting, but I would rather stay with Linux for the time being. If systemd encroaches more and I can't keep it out, then I think that I will eventually end up in FreeBSD.

I am just hoping that maybe enough people will leave Debian that they will be forced to reconsider their position.

I'm leaving my non-systemd options open. Hell, I'm even flirting with the idea of returning to OS/2 (via ecomstation).

(I *knew* I shoulda kept those old OS/2 books that I finally gave away 3 years ago.)

27k installed? That seems rather difficult to believe, unless that counts servers and duplicate votes. I was referring to desktop home users.
