Gnome 3.16 status

#1 Post by argorain »

Hi.
I am really looking forward to Gnome 3.16, so I am watching at this site for progress: https://www.0d.be/debian/debian-gnome-3.16-status.html
I found some packages grayed out, so 'Not in Debian'. This list is slowly growing. Why was thus packages dropped?
For example gnome-calendar or gnome-weather?
I have theory about some rights issue, but I don't know.
Thanks for reply!

The GNOME-weather package was dropped because the images used for the backgrounds violated the licensing conditions for Debian.

I don't have time to search but I suspect the others have been dropped for similar reasons.

I like to keep tabs on Gnome's UI changes over time. I download a live image when a new stable version comes out just to try. This one looks recent

http://antergos.com/try-it/

May download it (1.5Gb) tomorrow at College on their fast connection and see.

Manjaro Linux has Gnome 3.16 in their repository, but they do not seem to distribute a live image that boots into Gnome, their 'community' edition live ISOs are lagging bit. Manjaro is Arch with a profanity delay (no nasty surprises) and an actual installer.

Debian is all about stability and about freedom, hence really careful checking of licences as mentioned in the comment above.

Gnome distributes a live version on their own page. I think it is based on OpenSUSE.

Thanks guys.
I was guessing something like this, I was just curious.
I tested it at latest Fedora 22 and it looks awesome. But I don't like Fedora attitude, so I am looking forward for Debian with Gnome 3.16.
Thanks.

According to this, gnome-weather is being repackaged for 3.18 with DFSG-compliant backgrounds.
Someone could also easily create deb packages for previous versions to make them easier to install.

What particular feature are you looking for that is unavailable in version 3.14.1?

Reworked notification system for example. Also new Adwaita design looks great.

Yeah.
But more visible than in past. For example try to kill bottom pop-up bar is great.
In my opinion it makes more sense than so far.

Fedora alpha with 3.18 devel came out a couple of days ago. Seem more or less the same as previously. more wayland, less bugs.
