Debian-virus (humor)

Postby GarryRicketson » 2015-06-30 03:31

There is a very dangerours debian virus going around.
It is called "periculosum-imperitos-operator" It usually occurs after a fresh Debian install,
then, once root access is gained it goes to work, gradually, or in some cases imediatley destroying the system.
How can it be avoided ? There are no "virus scanners" that can detect this dangerous virus,
however, it has been found doing good research, and studying tutorials, can help prevent it.
There is a thread on this forum that can help avoid this very dangerous virus,
Beginner's Guide
From the signature of H_O_A_S,
Using Debian
and
https://wiki.debian.org/DontBreakDebian
All though there are very few viruses that can affect or harm debian, or a linux and unix system, and some people claim there are none, or it is not possible. But good "security" practices and maintanence is still adviseable,and important. It is deffinately
possible for a linux machine to carry windows viruses, and spread them to windows servers and machines.
However this "periculosum-imperitos-operator" is , as far as I know, the most dangerous virus known to be able to infect and destroy a debian,linux or unix system. So care should be taken to avoid it. :mrgreen:

The most dangerous of all Linux viruses is the conviction that mixing repositories from different distributions should always work.

I also dare say, the second most dangerous is the attitude that the way MS Windows does things, is the only logical way.
Debian == { > 30, 000 packages }; Debian != systemd
The worst infection of all, is a false sense of security!
It is hard to get away from CLI tools.

;)
Those who don't understand Unix are condemned to reinvent it, poorly...

This would be better if you remove the "(humor)" [sic] bit from the title ;)

Disagree. Sarcasm doesn't always translate well, and someone with limited skills in either English or Latin might take this seriously (and maybe already have).

(And don't even get me started on the idea that the word should be operatoris in this context.)

Yes, that's why it would have been better that way...

Oh geez, do we need a variant of Godwin's Law for systemd now?

Wikipedia is often vandalised. There are other more reliable reading resources.

Ask any university professor what is their opinion about students citing Wikipedia in their assignments.

I think it's an acceptable abuse on the debian user forums :)

Much opinionated.
Some abrasive.
No systemd.
Wow.

I was debating whether this is a trojan rather than a virus, when I realized it’s just the standard PEBCAK error.

Maybe we should start work on a patch for user-level access to the package manager application:
Code: Select all
$ apt-get install clue

Clamav
anti-virus utility for Unix - command-line interface

Clam AntiVirus is an anti-virus toolkit for Unix. The main purpose of
this software is the integration with mail servers (attachment
scanning). The package provides a flexible and scalable
multi-threaded daemon in the clamav-daemon package, a command-line
scanner in the clamav package, and a tool for automatic updating via
the Internet in the clamav-freshclam package. The programs are based
on libclamav6, which can be used by other software.

This package contains the command line interface. Features:
- built-in support for various archive formats, including Zip, Tar,
Gzip, Bzip2, OLE2, Cabinet, CHM, BinHex, SIS and others;
- built-in support for almost all mail file formats;
- built-in support for ELF executables and Portable Executable files
compressed with UPX, FSG, Petite, NsPack, wwpack32, MEW, Upack and
obfuscated with SUE, Y0da Cryptor and others;
- built-in support for popular document formats including Microsoft
Office and Mac Office files, HTML, RTF and PDF.
For scanning to work, a virus database is needed. There are two options
for getting it:
- clamav-freshclam: updates the database from Internet. This is
recommended with Internet access.
- clamav-data: for users without Internet access. The package is
not updated once installed. The clamav-getfiles package allows
creating custom packages from an Internet-connected computer.

And if you want a "front end" or GUI ,ClamTk
ClamTk is a GUI front-end for ClamAV using perl-Gtk2.

It is important to keep it updated. Also it is safe to use, won't harm your system, if used according to the manual, etc.

ClamAV has a PEBKAC detector??

I'm pretty sure it's broken. :mrgreen:
