Flightgear scrapped my graphics
Hi, I have installed flightgear recently. As well I found the q button to upgrade from Wheezy to Jessie. Lucky me. However, I got rid of flight gear again cuz it scrapped my graphics.
Has someone encounterd graphics issues after the installation of flightgear and can enlighten me on how to fix this?
Thanks,
Steve

This was "THE" Debian Linux secret. I guess.
However, the graphics wash on the screen while I'm scrolling or some images are building up.

Exactly how did you install flightgear?
And what the heck is the "q" button?

Hello,
how exactly did I install flight gear?
sudo apt-get install flightgear
and then
sudo apt-get remove flightgear
I think. I then upgraded from Wheezy to Jessie. However, the upgrade didn't fix the graphics issues.
I'm pretty new to Debian Linux. Whatever, on Wheezy you need to kind of escape amidst the upgrade procedure
apt-get upgrade
with the 'q' (quit) key on your keyboard to finally upgrade to Jessie.

- flightgear is not part of the wheezy release;
- you either grab it from a PPA or from another debian release.
In any of those scenarios you should read Don't Break Debian
it looks like you missed some stepsSteve Ford wrote:on Wheezy you need to kind of escape amidst the upgrade procedure

Re: Flightgear scrapped my graphics
Actually it is available in the wheezy repos, but is called FGO,by fireExit »those 2 statements don't add up:
- flightgear is not part of the wheezy release;
https://packages.debian.org/wheezy/games/fgo
However some packages that worked for Wheezy, have not yet been
updated, to run in Jessie, as far as I know, those are not available in the
repos for Jessie
Agreed the OP should read the "Don't break Debian" though,...I do not know if
"FGO", (flight gear) is available for Jessie, the current stable version, if it is not, it
would not upgrade correctly, when they upgraded to Jessie.
Review the release notes, as suggested by fireexit.
This thing about the "Q" button, still is a mystery, but one thing for sure, if the OP is trying
to run the Wheezy version of FGO. on Jessie, it would not work, and could have caused
some damage.

Re: Flightgear scrapped my graphics
There might be a better solution, but I use a different partition, one for Debian 8 (jessie) another
for Debian Wheezy 7.8, also 2 other partitions, for some other distros I work with, but that does
not matter much.
If you still have a Wheezy ISO, that might be the easiest thing to do, resize the partition, make a new one for wheezy, install it.

Re: Flightgear scrapped my graphics
FlightGear used to be good. Now it's just garbage, unoptimized code, poor performance and development. What can one expect from developers who say "yeah we have 16/32 GB of RAM so we're coding FG to use that. We don't care how much RAM you've got, FG is our product"? Yeah, I'm guessing they don't know what kind of people use a FREE flight simulator the most.
Go for X-Plane 10, it's by far the best flight simulator for home/business consumers. You can download the Free demo to test it out: you'll be surprised

It's hard to say--you say you hit "q" for quit during the upgrade, and did not say how you attempted to install FG on Wheezy or Jessie. We have no way of knowing just how your system is broken.Steve Ford wrote:How do I fix this? Can I safely revert to Wheezy somehow?

Re: Flightgear scrapped my graphics
I actually first installed Flight Gear. Then I noticed FG was responding slowly. Therefore, I removed FG. again. After that, I upgraded to Jessie. To upgrade from Wheezy to Jessie you need to press q amids the installation procedure. This does not quit the upgrade but the first part of it. After you have had pressed q the upgrade has been processing normally.
If you don't quit, the upgrade isn't installed (q quits all of the text of acknowledgements ). On my pc right now, Jessie is installed as an upgrade not from CD.

Re: Flightgear scrapped my graphics
This begs the question: Since Flightgear (Debian used to call it fgfs) is not in the Wheezy repositories, how did you install it? Going outside the repositories can break your system if you or the packager are not careful.

Re: Flightgear scrapped my graphics
If you are using an older machine, going from Wheezy to Jesse could putz things up becuase the Jessie video drivers removed 80,000 lines of code dealing with older video drivers such as the rv350.
Also: be wary of messing with systemd. It includes systemd-login which has a grub hook that will somehow screw up video if disabled, or missing.
Siwtch to the Vesa drivers from I believe nvidia-nouveau until you can get the 3d stuff sorted out.

Re: Flightgear scrapped my graphics
Hi,
I do not remember this precisely. Well, I simply was trying some lines of input code a few times. However, not very fancy commands had to be used to install and to remove flight gear.
Anyway, the program started and ran, but, endless slowly.
