I don't think geany may slow down your Debian performance, perhaps VLC?

Check your "top" or "htop" on terminal to be sure exactly who consumes your mem/cpu usage.
OS: Devuan GNU/Linux 4 (chimaera/ceres)
WM: Openbox / Tint2

Tested this. It's fine on my side.

Graphics: Intel
Architecture: amd64
DE: MATE

CPU is low e.g. < 4% per core.

Code: Select all
pkill -9 vlc

I run that several times a week, because vlc gets stuck eating up my cpu, even after I've closed it. I've never noticed whether it was related to geany or not. I almost always have geany open. Just last week, I finally made a panel button to run that command in a script, because I got tired of typing it so often.
