64-bit jessie .iso image from 32-bit MS-windows possible ?

#1 Post by shirish »

Hi all,

While it should be possible, has anybody tried putting a 64-bit .iso image on a usb disk from 32-bit MS-Windows ?

If yes, what program did they use ? I have been told about Rufus as well as w32imager

http://rufus.akeo.ie/
http://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/files/

This is from https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/ ... 03.html.en

Look forward to what people have tried.
Intel Dual-Core CPU E5400 (soc 775) @ 2.70GHz, onboard Intel G33, Asus MB P5KPL-AM IN (Intel G31), D-Link 2750u modem+router, 64-bit Debian Testing, Mate 1.26

The ISO image is just a bunch of data. When you transfer the files under Windows, it doesn’t matter whether the ISO contains 32-bit or 64-bit programs. The only time it matters whether the software is 32-bit or 64-bit is when you try to execute the program, which you can’t do from the ISO image under Windows.

I kind of doubt there are many users here who have written bootable Debian ISO images to a USB stick under Windows; how to do so is more a topic for a Windows forum. Nevertheless:

The following forum thread indicates that Unetbootin works.

The following link claims win32diskimager works.

I hear that YUMI works well. Check out this site for lots of information: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/

and the official directions from Debian: https://www.debian.org/releases/jessie/ ... 03.html.en

IIRC it's a hybrid ISO, so anything that can write the raw image will do. Win32 Disk Imager works just fine.
YUMI works for the live disk, but last time I tried it with the installer it needed some modifications to find it's source drive. The YUMI site also warns that it's intended only for live distros, and any installer that works is entirely by accident.
Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Three times is enemy action. Four times is Official GNOME Policy.
