There are various reasons why one may want to have a lightweight alternative to Texlive.

kerTeX is a small and fast TeX kernel for POSIX.2 systems that
includes TeX, METAFONT, dvips, BibTeX, e-TeX, CWEB,
and MetaPost. The C version used is C89.

The developer is Thierry Laronde.

kerTeX is now available for Debian amd64 too:

For a detailed exposition of the system and its motivation,
see

Welome to the "Debian User Forums" ,mvatten

This software is not in the Debian repositories,

Debian users should all ways be carefull before using software from random websites.
From: https://wiki.debian.org/DontBreakDebian
On Debian installing software from random websites is a bad habit.
I am not saying the software that "mvatten ' is trying to promote is good or bad, on that
I really don't know.
But it is important that especially new Debian users be aware of the risks and problems that software from random websites can cause.
