Am I the only one that is sad that Iceweasel is changing?

Edbarx, I don't know what DE or WM you're using, but yesterday this (see below) helped me a lot with XFCE and a much larger (19") screen:

Ugly fonts in XFCE

1. Create a file local.fonts in /etc/font

Paste this content:

2. Empty all XFCE files in ~/.cache/session

3. Create a file .Xresources in your home directory

Paste this content:

Xft.hinting: true
Xft.rgba: rgb
Xft.autohint: false
Xft.hintstyle: hintslight
Xft.lcdfilter: lcddefault

Save this file.

4. Execute this command:
xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources

5. Log out and log in.

Perhaps this will help you any further. Now also Openbox looks much brighter and smoother.

I think it must be more reliable than Pale Moon, I had difficult to compile it trough Git so I would try with the OpenSuse builder.

I am using XFCE 4.10. The only problem I had with fonts was Palemoon's use of unsmoothed fonts which stressed my eyes' focusing muscles unneccessarily. I followed advice from Stevepusser who instructed to use "dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig-config". That presented me with a debconf TUI interface that asked me several questions about how I want my fonts rendered on my system as is apparently as systemwide setting. After following Stevepusser's advice my fonts are smoothed and not stressful on my eyes.

Again, I wish to thank you for taking your time to help me. I will add a window manager in case XFCE continues with its quest of welcoming more bloat. If fonts appear as I wish them in a window manager, that will be another option for a graphical interface that I can use. If not, I will use your instructions to setup font rendering the way I want it.

Danielsan, I had the same impression the first time I used a precompiled Palemoon installation the link to which is unimportant since it evidently was not compiled for Debian/Devuan. However, after following Stevepusser's advice, I can now enjoy reliable websurfing that doesn't overload my system forcing my CPU fan to get into frequent fits of frenzy and an undue RAM consumption. My advice is to follow Stevepusser's advice as it has proven to be good advice: I am a witness to that. You can keep Chrome/Chromium and Iceweasel/Firefox for nasty websites that require a modern super-bloated web-browser whenever the need forces you to visit such sites.

Those who have been using Debian and Iceweasel know pretty well that Iceweasel WAS NOT Firefox. Maybe, the present Iceweasel is Firefox, but definitely the Iceweasel many users have been using for so many years does not have all the sluggishness and bloat that the current Iceweasel has. I and many others had to resort to alternatives so that we could continue to use our hardware. Users of extremely powerful hardware employing several processor cores together with a huge RAM and a GPU intended for gamers, cannot make a good comparison. Iceweasel was lean, fast and efficient on hardware; the current Iceweasel is Firefox with a different name.

For quite some time I have been disappointed by the changes of Firefox since version 24.
In my opinion Iceweasel wasn't just a simple Firefox other name.

It just started receiving a lot of changes that people did not really like. Added bloat making it heavier and a change in the interface (australis).

Thanks for that. Coming to this "late" (about 8 months ago) I don't have the long memory of what Iceweasel was.

The Australis is contensious, even to me. I dislike it mostly because I have to remeber if I'm in Chrome or Firefox when just glancing at the interface. I understand why they did it ... I just not a huge fan.

One solution Seamonkey. Not in repos, but you can download the binary and run it with no problems from /home.

I use the Firefox 45 esr edition from Mozilla website it works great on Jessie and should be supported for a good while.

Mozilla Firefox was always GNU/ Free software, it is just now compatible with the DSFG.

I prefer the firefox icon. But speaking of browsers, the only thing I was sad about is that the x86 version of google-chrome was ended, so no more drm video streaming on those old machines.
