Purely pedantic point: Openbox is a WM, not a DE

+1

I have voted for GNOME but my preferred desktop uses the bspwm window manager and xfce4-panel with xfsettings running so I can use the XFCE settings GUI to fiddle with stuff.

I don't think I've ever heard of Budgie.

It's gorgeous -- basically GNOME-shell with custom configs :)

Does Budgie not need a PPA to install in Jessie? (Don't break Debian)

LXQT is an amalgam of LXDE (in the Jessie Repository and included in the poll) and Razor-QT (in the Jessie Repository and not included in the poll). Openbox is a WM, but is it not the default WM for LXQT and a WM is necessary for LXQT?

Does LXQT in Jessie commonly not use a part of the Aptosid Repository? (Don't break Debian)

I loved KDE during the 3.x days and eventually got tired of the 4.x bugs.
XFCE all the way!

Voted KDE. Openbox is my favourite WM though.

Edit:
I also like Xfce and Trinity Desktop a lot. ;)

Xfce my favorite. MATE a close second. I like KDE on Stable, but not sure about all the coming changes.

KDE 3.x is still around, via TDE (Trinity). Exegnulinux has a live media version. (I've tried it; it rocks.)

Voted Gnome, I'm currently using a touchscreen laptop and it handles touch gestures the best. Plus, gnome-shell extensions, google drive integration with nautilus, and a pretty decent set of default applications.

That said, I've frequently used xfce and mate as well and I hope both continue their good work. I've also spent time using stand alone WMs (which openbox is, not a DE) and of those openbox and dwm are my favorites.

I detest icons on the screen. For me a right click menu is mandatory.

Another purely pedantic point: KDE's Dolphin also has "custom actions," except they're called "service menus."

I'm a diehard KDE fan myself. (As as far as WM's go, Fluxbox FTW!)

I'm a diehard KDE fan also, but currently using Xfce on MX-15 until Plasma 5 matures a bit more. Plasma 5 is the best desktop I have used but I managed to break it in siduction a little while back. Will definitely be trying it again soon with the next siduction release, which will be soon apparently.

If you've not tried stevepusser's MX-16 KDE spin, it's definitely worth a look, IMO.

I used to use a few icons on the desktop, but it only gave rise to more....... out of laziness really. It's just too easy for me to save something to the desktop so I don't have to look for it later. That was back in my M$ Windows days. Besides it's kind of like storing stuff that you need quickly on the bottom of a pile.

My Linux/Debian desktops are icon free now, outside of the taskbar. My VM desktops usually don't even have a taskbar. They are truly free of everything but a clock created with Conky.

MX-16? I know of his MX-15 spin and intend to try it, but it is KDE4, no?
I'm patiently but eagerly awaiting a good Plasma 5. I've heard OpenSuse does it ok, but I started Linux with rpm distros and don't want to go back. Also heard Kubuntu's Plasma 5 is meh. siduction was very usable until I broke it.
