Future of LXDE on Testing/Sid?

#1 Post by brodan »

Hi everyone,

I was wondering...when (and if ?) LXDE is dropped as a desktop environment, what might happen to the systems which use LXDE with Testing/Sid? I understand that LXQt is the proposed replacement, but will LXDE Testing/Sid users need to reinstall if they want to stay with an LXDE-like system once LXDE is finished?

Thank you.

Edited to add: I could be wrong, but I assume that it won't be possible to "upgrade" LXDE to LXQt; therefore, I can see only two possible options...

1. Add the LXQt desktop environment, and remove LXDE.
2. A complete reinstall of LXQt.

Am I correct? :)

No. Nothing prevents multiple DEs being co-resident on a single machine.

Since LXQT has different dependencies, the two will necessarily exist as different sets of packages.

Thank you dasein. Yes, I've had multiple desktops before on one system, and I had considered that option; however, after a few years of fun and experimentation, I no longer use multiple desktops. I just prefer a single DE, and I try to keep my system free of anything unneeded. So, my best option (for me personally) would be to remove LXDE.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I do appreciate it.

I agree. I'm fine with having multiple managers but I hate having multiple desktops- two file managers, two text editors, all those extra applications taking disk space and mucking up the menus- yuck. Even worse if it's a qt desktop and a gtk desktop.

Well...I forgot about a third option...

3. Remove LXDE and keep Openbox.

Which is what I went ahead and did last night.

Good move. Keep some of the LXDE tools. I have Pcmanfm, Lxterminal and Gpicview. The Tint2 taskbar is very good with Openbox.
