anki . It is a tool for learning. It comes with many built in flash cards . It allows you top make your own and download those made by others . I suggest taking a look at the anki homepage. It is also in the repositories.

scite text editor. I LOVE this app. You can do "notepad" type scribbling in it and it isn't tied to any distro, so you're not jumping in bed with gnome or kde.
...but wait! there's more!
this thing handles syntax checking for most popular languages. bash, perl, python, c++, ... It'll colourize and parse out your scripts and programs just like apps that cost $$$. I use it so much I can barely remember how nano works :) (this from polaris the linux luddite!)

Also, I really love e17 because it's a small DE with huge untapped potential. It's still a bit rough for workstations but I love playing with it. Check Bro Tiag if you need tips. He's really great with Elightenment.
for as long as the world remains. for as long as time remains. so, too, will I remain. To serve. To help. And to make my contribution. Also, never forget our family at debianuserforums.org If we can't solve your problem, they probably can.

This looks like, don't think I'll have anything to contribute. I'll go through the whole 20 odd pages to see if there's something I can contribute which has not been said/shared before. Do have a query though. Does anybody know of a tool which will extract info. from imdb.com/tmdb.org and dumping it into a text file ? I have been searching but with no luck .

Thank you for the recomendation of Terminator. I'm liking it! :)

Here are some that I consider amazing. I had to reduce the list a lot when I saw they were already mentioned here in this thread. All are in repositories for Testing/Jessie:
  • evolvotron - make random images, mutate them. Weeee!
  • mpl3blaster - play mp3s using a nice ncurses interface. I *think* this also installs mp3tag, a very nice command-line mp3 tag editor
  • mhwaveedit - edit samples. simple yet powerful and effective
  • ecasound & ecatools - command line audio processing software, similar to sox buf different enough that I find it best to have both sox and it installed on my system

I am using it. It's really helpful. There's also a fork of it called blueshift

https://github.com/maandree/blueshift

Unfortunately it's not packaged yet :(

https://packages.debian.org/wheezy/imdb-tools ?

https://packages.debian.org/wheezy/gcstar

https://github.com/automata/minera-imdb

https://github.com/bgr/imdb-cli

ymmv

I'll contribute:
1. cplay
https://packages.debian.org/wheezy/cplay
It's the most intuitive command line music player, a joy to use and has become my music player of choice.

2. lilyterm
http://lilyterm.luna.com.tw/
Not in Debian yet but there is a Debian package

3. f-irc
Terminal irc client
Very easy to use but I don't know if I'd say intuitive
in Debian in Jessie and sid
https://packages.debian.org/jessie/f-irc
A little buggy but fun and "different" the main dev is very approachable and helpful and has fixed bugs for me within the hour!

4. Loqui
GTK irc client
https://packages.debian.org/wheezy/loqui
The main feature for me is the "scroll common buffer" where it scrolls all comments from all channels your in. So although you maybe in a chat in say Debian in the top half of the screen you can read all chat in the other channels. Also it light. The down side is lack of development but it's pretty up to date atm.

Probably been mentioned but just in case not

5. dwb
https://packages.debian.org/wheezy/dwb
Very feature rich webkit browser

6. ranger
terminal file manager
https://packages.debian.org/wheezy/ranger
