Gentoo is number four on the list?
Apparently, the operating systems are not listed by installation difficulty.
1. Debian
Truth be told, Debian is still remarkably simple to get up and running, for the most part.

Oh come on...talk about keeping lies from the past going...Debian is not difficult to install, hasn't been in over 10 years, mid 90's maybe. Slackware was never hard to install, only step that may challenge some is partitioning the drive, the rest is simple. LFS, is a challenge by design, and is not difficult if you RTFM....
I guess Ubuntu sets the standard for this guy! Silly Silly Silly...Well on a lighter note, perhaps articles like this will keep many away from Debian and Slackware....In that case please write more articles like this so the kiddies will go elsewhere with their toys.

I think Debian Desktop systems —KDE, Gnome, Mate, xfce— can be used by anyone for normal desktop tasks like using a browser, word processing and so on, providing they've been properly installed and configured and, unlike server systems administration don't require any knowledge of the command line. For instance, my old dad who's in his eighties, enjoys using Debian mate and all I do is to occasionally update the system by ssh.
But installing a Debian desktop system isn't exactly rocket science either. The only hurdle is that proprietary drivers don't work out of the box and overcoming this difficulty has become a sort of "rite of passage" for newbies who may then told in a sort of schoolmasterly way to use Ubuntu or some "easier distro" if they fail to get the binary blob to work. As if learning to enable non-free stuff were some kind of initiation to Debian, which it shouldn't be.

tbf for the most part if you install on a computer with an ethernet connection debian is pretty straightforward for the most part
on a pc/laptop over wifi can be something else

Debian can be installed by a blind person vocally guided by a ten year old child. I don't know why it would be hard to install for anyone able to read, really.
And no Arch Linux? Whoever wrote this article doesn't know a thing about Linux.

The thing that makes it a little harder in comparison to the likes of, say, Ubuntu, is that it provides a larger amount of choice upon installation.

anyhow, what a completely pointless article!
the choice of distros is totally arbitrary.
who needs a comparison of a few top ten distros with a few bottom 500?
exherbo? "That being said, Exherbo was never designed for end users in the first place." WTF?
also the "results" are not ordered by difficulty, so even the title of the article is misleading.
so apart from being pointless, it is also bad journalism.

Number 1 != Debian [ i.e. Debian is definitely NOT the hardest.]
Reason: Misplaced exclamation mark.
I would have awarded that status to a distribution that requires the compilation of everything from source. Debian automatically manages dependency trees which makes it too pampering to call 'difficult'.

I can only assume the author arranged them in numerical order of INCREASING difficulty, because that is the only order that makes sense. Totally depends on skill level of course. I find Gentoo easy to install for example, it's just a PITA because it takes so long and I hate having to compile packages: the speed gains to me, do not outweigh the effort involved.

i didn't consider that (in one of my previous responses).
however, i tried it, and failed after a few days (a short time span for a gentoo install i guess).
i'm still failing miserably on Nr.4 (but i wouldn't have to reboot just to get out of vi)...
i guess i'll never be a
real nerd...
