Just to say thanks to all concerned. Upgraded my desktop from Jessie to Stretch today and all went well. Only quirk was that it was to 9.1 as I only have two lines in my /etc/apt/sources.list. Adding deb http://deb.debian.org/debian stretch-updates main and running apt-get update pulled in a base package that completed the upgrade to 9.2

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian stretch main
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian stretch-updates main
deb http://security.debian.org/ stretch/updates main
