Debian 9 - NetworkManager show wifi list but not working

#1 Post by andrea96 »

Hi,
I'm a new GNU/linux user and some days ago I've installed Debian 9 Stretch.
During the installation setup I had to put in a USB device non-free firmware because the intel wireless card didn't work.
Done this, the installation have finished without any problems, but now I can't to connect to the internet through WiFi and, unfortunately, I don't have the possibility to connect by cable.
I've tried to search on the internet the same problem, there are many discussions about WiFi problems, but can't solve mine.
Anyway, when I put in terminal:

Code: Select all

ip link show
or

Code: Select all

ip a
The results is:

Code: Select all

and the

iwconfig
output is:

What is the make and model of your laptop? Could you tell us more about the device you put in [i.e. exactly what it was]?

I haven't a laptop, anyway my pc configuration:
CPU: Intel core i7-6700K - 4.0GHz
RAM: 16GB
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX-980 - VRAM 4GB
1 SSD - 500GB (Windows 10)
! HHD - 1TB (I've installed in a partition Debian 9)

About the Internet Card I've got confused, it's not Intel: Ralink RT73 Wireless LAN Card)
If you want I can post a list of firmware installed in /lib/firmware

This should be able to help.
https://wiki.debian.org/WiFi/rt73
Unfortunately I've already whatched this page, I've already install the non-free package but the result is the same.
The strange thing is that during the installation, when I've insert my USB device (where there are non-free firmware packages) in the computer, it asked me which interface card to use (the first was the integrated ethernet card, and the second was the external RT73 card), I've chosen the second one, I've chosen the ESSID, I've entered the WPA2 key, and the installation was successful.
Since I've used a "netinst" ISO, I suppose that it has download something during the installation to successful, don't you think?
Ah, I've tried also:
ip link set dev enp0s31f6 down (the integrated ethernet card) and than service network-manager restart but nothing.

Can you post the output of:

Code: Select all

lsusb
and

Code: Select all

lspci -vv | grep -i network

Re: Debian 9 - NetworkManager show wifi list but not working

#7 Post by andrea96 »

Certainly!
for lsusb the output is:

Code: Select all

Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 148f:2573 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT2501/RT2573 Wireless Adapter
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 1d57:0008 Xenta
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0781:5581 SanDisk Corp. Ultra
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Instead lspci -vv | grep -i network haven't output.

lsusb definitely sees your usb adapter. Try re-running the lspci command as root (or just drop the -vv for this). When that works, use the output to provide more detailed information. Example:

Code: Select all

lspci -vv -s 0c:00.0
Per this guide:
https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/linux-fin ... r-chipset/

It should give us some idea as to whether the kernel module loads or not.

When I re-run lspci -vv | grep -I network as root the result is the same. Tried also replacing "network" with "wireless", "ralink" and "net" (with "net" show the internal ethernet interface).
In fact, after this, I've tried lspci -vv > output1.txt and when I search those words in this file, there is nothing.
Per this guide:
https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/linux-fin ... r-chipset/
I've take a look to this guide but without output of previous commands I don't know what I should to insert after lspci -vv -s

Yes, it's a typing error. In the terminal I've write correctly.

Bizarre. Can you post the output of lspci -vv?

So lsusb sees your device, but lspci doesn't. This is probably outside my expertise, but make sure the ralink module is loaded (check the page sent earlier), using modprobe as root, or checking using lsmod as a user. If you find nothing, start grepping dmesg with relevant search strings.

As root, run iwconfig. You are looking for wlan0. Some times it is assigned to wlan1 or something else.

Take a look at this thread.

Network Manager is a beautiful app when it is working properly and worse than a root canal when not. Consider Wicd or simply using a few lines in /etc/network/interfaces . See here. Scroll down to Command Line.

Bulkley, did you see the original post? It included some bizarre names for common interfaces. Also, the op has, if I followed correctly, two wireless interfaces: internal and USB. The link you posted seems excellent if there is only one interface.

You are right. I fogged over when I read all that.
n_hologram wrote:Also, the op has, if I followed correctly, two wireless interfaces: internal and USB.
Any possibility that the two interfaces are confusing Network Manager? I'd pull out that USB and concentrate on getting the on-board to work. Since this is a desktop that doesn't go anywhere I'd keep it simple and use wpa-supplicant instructions in /etc/network/interfaces.

I wonder if the OP would be better off installing the unofficial Debian that comes with drivers. I installed MX on my laptop sand everything works, including Network Manager.

Those are called "Predictable Interface Names", the new and modern way systemd enumerates interfaces.

I like Bulkley's suggestion to look at the Wiki, How to use, and/or using the install that includes firmware.

Another minor point, this thread should probably be in Installation rather than General Discussion.

n_hologram I don't think it is, trust your tests.

I'm an old guy and I won't be here much longer, it is to everyone's benefit that you become adept because you put in the effort to help.

I'll make some suggestions:

I think the OP's description of the issue is a bit obscure and somewhat confusing.

Tests indicate that there is only an ethernet interface on the pci buss. It's a desktop, they often don't come with installed or embeded WiFi interfaces. OP didn't tell us the make and model number as suggested by Lysander so we can't check that.

The wireless, as you have identified is USB, the Ralink. The driver should already be in the kernel so check the Ralink page to ensure that it is one of the "supported devices", just in case.

Ensure that the ralink firmware is installed and in use.

Proceed using the knowledge you now have about predictable interface names with the Wiki, WiFi,HowToUse, that Bulkley suggested. It hasn't been updated for Predictable Names but you could figure it out by replacing wlan0 with the new interface name.

At least that's how I would approach it. If it doesn't work after that, I'll be lost too.
