Hi

Things need to converge too... after an expansion...

1. I was wondering... except for the minimal install for a Debian WM/Desktop say xfce, if the flatpak mechanism is applied, then what will be the new Debian repository and applications...?

2. Debian is concerned to security and reliability... will the flatpak base with an outside application be safe enough?

Trying out new software has never been safer and easier!

I can't see Debian turning away from the simplicity, speed, efficiency, and much smaller size of packages that are built from source using shared libraries, to embrace flatpaks as default. They are huge and bloated (300 MB for Telegram-desktop) and have trouble with respecting your theming, too.

How many architectures do they support? How many of those can you fit on your Pi?

It seems that for Debian, flatpak isnt the top notch solution.

I don't find the "flatpak" one size fits all mentality at all appealing. It reduces diversity of the software landscape and for what? The idea of a ubiquitous delivery system to many clients is a very scary idea - too much concentrated power reaching too far. But maybe I'm missing something . . .

If I may offer a paranoid perspective...

The Debian packaging ecosystem allows the user to download the source code and all of the modifications and configuaration options applied by the package maintainer.

How does this work with Flatpak?

What are the configuration options that have been applied? Can we see the _full_ source code for any given package?

That sums up pretty well how I was thinking this was going to come down. I can see how new users would fall for their song and dance thinking it is really cool. But in reality a future with a Poettering OS "enhanced" with Flatpack apps is a gigantic nightmare . . .

Call them fatpacks instead?

indeed, "flatpak" seems to be an intentional misnomer, creating an illusion of lightweightness, distracting from the harsh facts.

ok, they have their uses every now and then, but they should not replace regular package management.
unless we want to hop on the "get new hardware every year to keep up with the software" train...
