wifi install not working

Postby mariner2 » 2018-06-10 23:45

Hello All,
I am new to this forum, please bear with me........
I spent many hours online and tried many given solutions, but so far i have not been able to get the wifi to work
I have read through this forum regarding WIFI, but cannot find the information either.

The laptop is Toshiba R830 , dual boot Linux Debian9 & win10pro-64. (wifi works fine in the win OS)
Debian kernel --> 4.9.0-6-amd64
Wifi device --> Intel® Centrino® Advanced-N 6230
I downloaded from Intel --> iwlwifi-6000g2b-ucode-18.168.6.1.tgz
I used--> sudo apt-get install iwlwifi-6000g2b-ucode-18.168.6.1.tgz (it states the it is not a Debian package)
Also downloaded ---> firmware-intelwimax_20161130-3_all.deb but no wifi radios showing, in fact is nothing working.
In the top right hand corner of the screen is showing is a Wifi icon. But clicking on it does nothing

Can anyone please help?

1) Make sure your sources list has
main contrib non-free
like this >>> https://dflinux.frama.io/thebeginnersha ... istration/

Wireless firmware is in the non-free repository.

2)
Connect TEMPORARILY by cable.

Issue this command AS ROOT

Code: Select all
apt install firmware-iwlwifi

It will ask for the password, then let it run.

When it has finished, remove the cable and reboot.

Your wifi should be working.

If you must have wi-fi working to have a Net connection, manually download the deb with a connected OS from here: https://packages.debian.org/stretch/firmware-iwlwifi

Transfer it to the isolated OS/machine, and install it with "dpkg -i <debfile>". Reboot and wifi should work.

Does Debian have a FAQ page we could link to, since this wi-fi firmware one comes up many times a week?
The MX Linux repositories: Backports galore! If we don't have something, just ask and we'll try--we like challenges. New packages: GIMP 2.10.6, Pale Moon 28.1.0, wine-staging 3.16, qBittorrent 4.1.3, Linux kernel 4.18.8, virtualbox 5.2.18

I propose it gets stickied somewhere in the beginners and general questions sections. I am getting tired of repeating myself.

There are several other common questions, such as AMD firmware and how to get a newer version of an application on stable, that a FAQ would be better, IMO.

I asked about this FAQ thing awhile back, I tried to volunteer Garry to write it, he is kind of wordy...? (and bilingual)

I think it's a great idea, and have some suggestions for other items to be in the FAQ, let me know if I can help.

Thank U BW123, your suggestion of https://packages.debian.org/stretch-bac ... re-iwlwifi
worked a treat. Wifi is working perfectly now -->Many thanks,
Just a friendly note for the Linux Community:
After 25 years of using MS WIndows, it is hard to get used to the (to me anyway) convoluted way Linux is setup, as there are sooo many different versions, sooo many websites offering suggestions, sooo many nondescript cryptic names.
There seems to be no consensus for solutions, even between the same versions . This makes it quite hard for newbies to find anything.
Either-way, I will persevere with Debian --> As i said, this is just a friendly note. :wink:
Many thanks to all contributors.
