Everytime I install Debian I always have to bother with removing the CD-ROM in "/etc/apt/sources.list":
deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux testing _Buster_ - Official Snapshot amd64 DVD Binary-1 20181217-04:26]/ buster contrib main

I find this very strange that this is the default. I assume 99 out of 100 users want and have e.g. "deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ buster main" as the repository.

Can anyone tell me why this is a good idea?

it not, how do we request a feature requests for Debian (which package is responsible for this, debian-installer?)
It can hardly be called a bug (but it's just as annoying as one)

Just access your sources.list, as Root, and put a # at the beginning of the CD-Rom line and save it.

Because some people want to have an offline installation.

Not everybody has an internet connection and Debian is kind enough to accommodate such people by providing their packages on CDs & DVDs, this is extremely useful actually and not something offered by many other distributions.

To avoid having to edit your sources after installation simply ensure that the installer has an internet connection and is provided with a mirror when it requests one.

2: I do have an internet connection under installation and also selecting a mirror. This happens both for Debian 9 & 10

So, it's the debian-installer which take care of this?

Everybody's a critic sheesh. Still an overall trivial thing, after all the amazing work the folks behind Debian put into things. Curious does it give any errors?

If the installation media is not inserted, it will sit and time out. It is better just to comment it out.

^Thanks, always do net installs, generally without any connection and inevitably end up having to manually populate sources.list. Still tiny effort and time compared to the people who dev/maintain Debian.

It's not a default, the CDROM entry is only left active if no mirror is supplied.

Bullshit.

There is no "Debian 10" and there won't be for several months.

If you have experienced this with the Debian buster installer (which I doubt) then please indicate exactly which image you tried.

I will allow you some benefit of the doubt in respect of Debian 9 because there are problems reported sometimes if the "live" ISO image is used to install a system, the general advice is to use the netinstall image instead as that seems to be more reliable.

I have personally installed Debian jessie & stretch *many* times (using the non-free netinstall image) and I have never had to comment out the CDROM source, the internet sources have always been activated correctly.

And I've just tested the alpha5 buster netinstall image and that also commented out the CDROM lines and added the mirror that I supplied, here is the proof: ^ I think the last 5 lines are the clincher here, no?

^Thanks for confirming the situation. What I'd been thinking is the case but not in a position to do what you did to verify. Cool to know what's what.
