I'm usually on Testing but wait a few weeks after launch before I upgrade, hoping for the worst bugs to be identified until then. Same thing if I was running stable. I mean, there will always be a couple of new bugs after release so one can as well wait a bit.

./crap-post.sh --comment "this poll could be better" --force
Two of my three systems are still running Debian Wheezy and my laptop is loving Debian Buster.

Put me in the already upgraded camp. I try to wait, but I always get impatient and upgrade some time between the hard freeze and release day.

brave ones all of you who have upgraded, i have setup stretch just the way i like it. i fear the upgrade might change or break something. stretch would have to be pried from my cold dead fingers before i let it go :D

It will. There are a lot of changes in the file hierarchy. For example, Buster could not find my Brother scanner until I copied the Brother libraries to a different directory. And all of the packages that depend on Qt4 and libmariadbd18 have to be rebuilt, so Amarok will not be in Buster, nor will kodi-pvr-hts.

I still have two systems running Wheezy. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

There are no security upgrades for Wheezy. But that's not much of an issue for my two Wheezy machines. One is a television server (for over-the-air broadcast TV). The other is my phonetop, which I use as an alternative desktop, but rarely use to browse the internet.

For everything else, I have a laptop running Debian Buster.

Backup the system before upgrading then. But you already have a full backup, right?

If you're using btrfs then take a snaphot, boot into the snapshot and upgrade that to test.

I'll wait a couple of months before upgrading to Buster just in case!
Debian 12 Gnome on a MSI H61M-P25 (B3) PC & on a Dell Latitude E6410 & HP EliteBook 8540p Laptops.
LMDE 6 on a Panasonic ToughBook CF-C1 Laptop.
Bodhi Linux 7 on a HP Compaq DC5750 Small Form Factor PC.
Windows 11 on a Intel DH55TC PC.

I'm running Sid on my desktop. Have been for several years. No problems whatsoever. So I don't need to upgrade to Buster, I already have it.

Strange, all my sid boxes say Buster and yours is sid?

I didn't like that for Sid, so I edited /etc/os-release to look like this:

Code: Select all

bloom@zilversteen:~$ cat /etc/os-release
PRETTY_NAME="Debian GNU/Linux 10 (sid)"
NAME="Debian GNU/Linux"
VERSION_ID="10"
VERSION="10 (sid)"
VERSION_CODENAME=sid
ID=debian
HOME_URL="https://www.debian.org/"
SUPPORT_URL="https://www.debian.org/support"
BUG_REPORT_URL="https://bugs.debian.org/"

The *fetch programs draw that information from /etc/os-release:

Code: Select all

E485:~$ dpkg -S /etc/os-release
base-files: /etc/os-release
E485:~$
The base-files package has just been updated in preparation for the Debian 10.0 release, your sid boxen will regain their identity when bullseye is created and a new base-files version is released for testing/unstable.
