I miss truly modular software free of systemd hooks that limit users' freedoms. This is the tragedy of the path that Debian has taken.

Has anyone else noticed that phpmyadmin has gone in Buster? :shock: I think I'll definitely miss it when I get to install buster on my server, if I ever get round to doing that before the next stable release. I know how to do the mysql stuff via the command line but using the GUI also was convenient.

I think we need an addition to Goodwin's law: "The longer a thread in this forum goes on, someone will sooner or later blame Debian for implementing systemd."

This is true. It is like a scab that never heals. We are currently dealing with one here (and following).

systemd is responsible for Brexit, climate change, wars, refugees, US mass shootings, and the decline of honeybees among other things. Or was it Bayer/Monsanto? One of them anyway. It's all part of the deep state.

Nope. It's just responsible for wanting to eat the entire pie.

Obsolete libraries.

gqview has been gone a long time. It was a fine image viewer with nice keyboard actions; no need for a mouse. Ristretto is good but the keys aren't as easy for me to remember.

gksu.

Gosh, I don't know how I forgot about that one :)

I just installed gksu from Oldstable on a fresh Sid install - it still works.

Code: Select all

$ rmadison startupmanager
startupmanager | 1.9.13-8      | oldoldstable | source, all
startupmanage, a gui to configure grub, usplash & splash screen. Last seen in jessie. I can't say I miss it myself it but it might've helped debianer98 to configure grub2 to automatically boot Windows before Debian, in this topic.

I appreciate the recommendations! Tried each and liked gpicview best - most closely like gqview.

geeqie I bit fat for my liking but you do get an awful lot of bang for your buck. I really like the way you can set your image editor, view the metadata and set wallpaper. But it does way way more than that

Now that's the ticket - even more to my liking. Gratitude.

phpbb3
This is the software used for this forum and was last available for "jessie;" so one might presume this forum is running with oldoldstable unless it's been installed otherwise. This page says it all: tracker.debian.org/pkg/phpbb3: :(
package is gone
This package is not in any development repository. This probably means that the package has been removed (or has been renamed). Thus the information here is of little interest ... the package is going to disappear unless someone takes it over and reintroduces it.
Now a friend of mine would like to set up a forum and is familiar, as all users of these boards are, with phbb. Since there are no deb packages available, the only way seems to be by following the instructions on the upstream site, but this goes a bit against the grain for a dedicated Debianite. But I'll now have a look for an alternative.
