Unless you buy a MacBook now apparently... or ChromeBook for that matter...Deb-fan wrote:Don't like Intel or Amd ? So basically you don't approve of systems with a cpu then? Lol ...
There are a few ARM64 laptops around now, I like the Samsung Galaxy Book S but it's rather pricey. And don't forget the PineBook (Pro)pylkko wrote:Unless you buy a MacBook now apparently... or ChromeBook for that matter...
They probably have their own issues that haven't been found or released yet. IIRC they had an issue a year or so ago regarding the way preemptive multitasking is handled on Ryzen, but that didn't stop me from getting a 3800X setup to replace the Intel that died last December.johnbeck7799 wrote:what is your opinion of whether AMD is really doing better security or simply has other yet to be discovered bugs?Head_on_a_Stick wrote:Yet more evidence that Intel are a bunch of clueless clowns: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en ... 00314.html
And Phoronix have noted a 58% performance hit for the Haswell generation when the patches are applied:

It'll be a while though before apps are ported to ARM. Faster maybe now that Apple is forcing the issue, but still quite a while.Head_on_a_Stick wrote:There are a few ARM64 laptops around now, I like the Samsung Galaxy Book S but it's rather pricey. Most of the software in the Debian repositories already works with their arm64 architecture.Mr. Lumbergh wrote:It'll be a while though before apps are ported to ARM
I was talking about commercial software specifically, but yeah, we are getting a little off topic so no worries.Head_on_a_Stick wrote:Most of the software in the Debian repositories already works with their arm64 architecture.Mr. Lumbergh wrote:It'll be a while though before apps are ported to ARM
Anyway, this is drifting off-topic so please open a new thread to discuss ARM further. Thanks.
I'm a bit of an AMD fanboi... This box has a Ryzen 3800X and RX580 graphics. They're not perfect though, so it stands to reason there's something there. Hackers are pretty relentless and they'll find something.Deb-fan wrote:Believe the whole AMD must have them too thing is a psychological ploy
That's a bummer. I don't like seeing anyone lose their jobs, and healthy competition is better for them and AMD both. I'm sure Apple's upcoming transition to ARM isn't helping matters either.pylkko wrote:Last week in the new was 1) Intel shares dropping when the announced that they will (again) have to post-pone the next 7 nm future procesoirs and 2) Intel letting many high level managemetn people go. So I guess they are feeling the heat alright...

Well, technically they wont loose their jobs, they will just start working somewhere else (maybe AMD or nvidia or similar). People like that are very wanted. This is how capitalism works, the share holders are disappointed and want to change the leadership, so it happens.Mr. Lumbergh wrote: That's a bummer. I dunno, that's exactly what "losing their jobs" sounds like to me and they have to find new ones. Given the state of things right now, that's a bit sketchy and not all of them will be able to do it.pylkko wrote:
