Making a Debian Bullseye theme proposal, thoughts/suggests?

Postby kcin » 2020-08-31 23:00

Hello again, I'm working on a new theme proposal for Debian 11 Bullseye. Would appreciate some feedback from Debian User Forums, before I complete and finalize my design.

Like the colors, but the name is Bullseye, ditch the asymmetry. Center the medallion, hit it like a gong, capture the vibrations in some ripples. My take...

Aha, you're the person who created the Buster default theme, right? I liked that a lot but had to make it a bit bluer for my desktop as it was a bit sad and grey.
I agree with CwF, using the name Bullseye as inspiration would be good, same as you used Buster the dachshund as the essence for Buster theme. The one you posted is quite good but I'm sure it's too bright and too purple for some diehard users, and doesn't convey anything to do with Bullseye. Bullseye in Toy Story is a horse with the mind of a puppy.

CwF, I initially tried placing the debian spiral logo in the center but it doesn't feel correctly with the swoosh going from left and ending on the right. So I think I will keep it that way for the main design for now. I like the concept of ripples or vibration as you mention, but I also really like the simple flow of the current swoosh and don't want it too busy.

sunrat, I tried muted colors last time and want to get away from that for this theme.I may try some color variations, color choice has mostly been positive so far. Yes, others have mentioned the current horse design I have, may not be the best fit. The only issue is that I don't want to make a horse look immature (as in cartoony version) or work horse (as in old/slow system), copying the bullseye horse is also not possible due to copyright and far too literal. I may not use the current horse design as the primary focus, and only add it sparingly.

Thanks to both of you for your suggestions and ideas. I also made a reddit thread on r/debian this time around to get more input, so I can finalize the design.

---

I've made some changes to the text logo design based on suggestions from reddit, I'd like to see people's opinion.

Please take a look here & make a vote:

There are 3 designs, the original one I had, and 2 new very similar one. I'm not concerned about colors as that will be adjusted depending where it is used, only the overall design.

Thank you.

I prefer the one above to those you just posted on imgur. Don't like the writing at all.

I should clarify the text design is mostly used for box branding and such and will not be used for the wallpaper.

Well, you ask, but won't like my opinion, the purple is awful...talk about bad taste.
Fortunately this is something that can easily be removed, and something more to my taste used instead.
The best theme I have seen was the Debian 6 theme, squeeze,..that was back when Debian was great, and people still had good taste.

I knew there would be one. You're still using squeeze, aren't you, cuckooflew?

To many cookies for my add blocker so only saw the top post.

1. Thoughts: It looks very nice, ignore everyone's advice including mine unless YOU like how it works.
2. Suggestions: Lower the Debian swirl and add a wave. Also if you want to stick "Bullseye" over it somewhere make sure you keep a clean version for folks on older or newer Debian

SpaceFun was pretty bad but there have been worse wallpapers eg. the current MX-19.2 one. :|

I don't mind purple but it would have to be more muted for wider appeal. You're never going to please everyone.

Yeah I am thinking of doing a far more muted version as an alternative, but the main will remain the vibrant gradient version.

Something like this:
