My last dear toshiba satellite died after serving me for a short 3 years. I now have a sony laptop with: 2.26GHz Centrino 2, 3GB ram, and Radeon HD3470 VGA card. Nothing too fancy but that thing is very lightweight and small.

I mainly use my laptop for doing most of my work i.e. programming, browsing, making music. Laptops nowadays are powerful enough for practically anything except gaming and video editing.

My new desktop
Gigabyte EP45-UD3P motherboard.
3.0GHz core2 quad
4GB ram
1TB RAID5 (3x 500GB)
Nvidia quadro FX 1300 - 2 screens
Nvidia RIVA/TNT - 3rd screen

This thing is CRAZY fast. Especially coming from my old desktop which had dual 1GHz P3s and 640MB ram. I can compile a kernel the debian way in 8 or 9 minutes.

jheaton5, how do you like that graphics card?
I had an HD 3450 and it SUCKED big time. I sold it and got the nvidia.
Desktop - 3.2GHz core2 quad
Laptop - 2.4GHz core2 duo ancient macbook

I've got one. Ran nice in Win7, but I didn't give it a proper stress test since WMFADist doesn't work on Win64(and thus F.E.A.R. is completely soundless). It's mostly the lacking quality of fglrx, methinks.

Hm... I was asking a question of someone else. However, to answer your question, my video card is an NVIDIA 8600M GS. I like it a lot. It was supported immediately by Lenny. I don't play a lot of games so I haven't put it through any tough tests.

I have a 3650 and I have been very pleased with it. It drives two monitors (one at 1280x1024, the other at 1680x1050)

ATM;
Athlon64 3800+
1 GB DDR2
1,5 TB hard discs (4x250GB (3xSATA2 + 1xIDE) + 500 GB SATA2)
Asus X850XT

New, still in the pipeline;
Intel i7 920
4 GB DDR3
2 TB hard discs (2x1 TB SATA2)
Asus 4870 DK 1 GB

Both use Western Digital drives only. The IDE drive in the old one is going into my server, and one 250 GB SATA is going into the new one for use with Debian, in a dual-boot configuration. The old desktop is getting reconfigured as a 1 TB media/file/printer server (sadly) running Windows 2003 Server. The reason is that I still believe that a file server for Windows desktops should run Windows. The fileserver will also be hooked up to a 42" Full HD LCD from Philips that I also have in the pipeline. :D

As you might have noticed, I kinda like storage space

I have yet to compile a kernel--I'm interested in doing it to get low latency audio with ALSA and/or JACK--but I did try compiling some other stuff with my first quad-core this week. I used make -j 4 and it flew. (Should I be forcing 4 or 5 jobs on a compilation? I remember hearing somewhere that I should add one to the number of processing cores...)
