irc clients

For those interested in the - Bash study group

You will need to use an irc client. There are many clients to choose from , Xchat and Konversation are probably the easiest GUI clients to use.

XChat: Quick Start Guide - http://xchat.org/docs/start/
XChat scripts - http://xchat.org/cgi-bin/script_list.pl/

Konversation -

"If you haven't used IRC before"
http://docs.kde.org/development/en/extr ... irc-basics

irssi http://www.irssi.org/documentation/startup
do /server irc.oftc.net then /join #debian-forums
After you register your nick you can do
/NETWORK ADD -autosendcmd "/^msg nickserv ident pass;wait 2000" OFTC
to have the server start when you start irssi.
For more info about irssi see : viewtopic.php?f=20&t=52625&hilit=irssi

weechat is a text irc client similar to irssi

Opera also has an irc client

All of the clients mentioned above are available in the Debian repos, with the exception of Opera which has its own repo.

You can also use chatzilla in iceweasel/firefox/seamonkey/iceape

Or if you prefer not to use any client you can use Mibbit in any browser.

irc is basically like using IM group chat, everyone in the channel can see what you 'say'.

Thanks, craigevil. That looks good ( i haven't followed all the links yet, but tried irssi... i think it worked).
Perhaps you should/could add it to the tips-thread, or somewhere it is easy to be found (how-to-section...etc).

Is there a FAQ with the general commands too (mainly irssi).
I clicked through your links, i found this site with gogol: http://www.webos-internals.org/wiki/Lin ... rial_Irssi , but i didn't find what i am looking for (my fault, of course, not that patient). Example: how do i identify as my nick (somewhere is say /IDENTIFY, but thats it and how do i change my password). Thanks
and yes: irssi rocks (just like shell-fm :-) ).

#debian-forums is on irc.oftc.net aka irc.debian.org
Services - OFTC
f you don't already have an account, you can register one with /msg NickServ REGISTER <password> <e-mail>

This will register a nickname in our database for your use. Registering your nickname ensures it is reserved for your use and cannot be used by others if you do not wish them to use it. It also allows you to associate various pieces of information with your nickname and also to have access to registered channels.

You can now also identify with NickServ on connect using SSL connections and client certificates. For more information about this feature please look at NickServ/CertFP.

/msg NickServ help will give you an overview of other NickServ commands.

I connect on OFTC and on Freenode using SSL

NickServ/CertFP - OFTC - http://www.oftc.net/oftc/NickServ/CertFP

Freenode is the other big Linux network, here you will find #debian, ##linux, #ubuntu, etc
freenode http://freenode.net/using_the_network.shtml
For general information on nickname or channel registration services, use "/msg nickserv help" or "/msg chanserv help". For specific information on registration, use "/msg nickserv help register" or "/msg chanserv help register".

Thanks.
The part how to register is clear, the question is how to identify (somehow that seems to be skipped everywhere i check).
Might be i needa check the ssl way you speak of (or simply live with being unidentified).

very confusing.
Best fun is to change the password, simply try it (/msg nickserv help... and so on, then i had to wait for a mail, told me to copy/paste, did that, told me i wouldn't exist).

cool music, btw, but off-topic, been listening to it for the last few hours. I don't take much care of my account:

/msg nickserv identify password
Most GUI clients can save it for you so you do not have to manually identify. irssi does it as well.

Better yet follow the directions to use a secure certificate in my last post.

nadir if you are using irssi, try using the Config script to set it up for you, http://www.matthew.ath.cx/programs/irssiconfig
Just download it then run it and put it the info.

ok, so i was able to create a password-reset-loop.
Resetting the passwd does work for others, for me it doesn't work.

Somehow i reset my password to something i can't remember anymore.*
That is what i do to recreate it (step by step, cause it must be something obvious to others):
1) i open xchat
2) i click on OFTC and then on connect
3) i am getting asked if i wanna connect to a channel, i say yes and type:
#debian-forums
4)now come a bunch of /msg commands. All of them i type where i am right now, correct?:
4a)-
Code: Select all
 /msg NickServ SENDPASS help

I am getting told i would get an email. Ok, the content of it looks like this:
4b)## lots of comments, then:
do copy and paste:
/msg NickServ SENDPASS nadir
-[0-9a very, very, very long number0-9]- <your-new-password>

4c)So i copy and paste, replace "<your-new-password> with my new password and am getting told:
NickServ- This account or the e-mail address on this account has already had a mail
-NickServ- sent to it. Please respond to that mail. If you feel this is incorrect,
-NickServ- contact network support.

I check my mail, and there is the mail which tells me to copy and paste, if i do that i am getting told i would already have got a mail, the mail tells me to copy and paste... etc, etc, etc.
Wtff am i doing wrong here?

PS: i can remember the old and the new password, but the channnel doesn'T accept both of them.
I can't remember all of the ~20 passwords i have tried during this torture.
And no, it is not a big thing. But it bugs me so much.

Hi nadir,

Someone (hopefully you) matching the IRC userhost
nadir!~markus@somewher_In_the_universe requested that the NickServ
password on the addressed nickname (nadir) be reset.

If this is you, go back to IRC and issue the following command
to complete the process:

/msg NickServ SENDPASS nadir
12345678ABCDEFG12345678ABCDEFG <yournewpassword>

If this was not you, please do not be concerned, no action has
been taken on your nickname. If think you have received this message
in error, please forward this message to support@oftc.net. Do not
reply to this mail as it is sent from an unattended address.

Kind regards,

OFTC IRC Nickname Services

Have you tried it as one line:
/msg NickServ SENDPASS nadir 12345678ABCDEFG12345678ABCDEFG <yournewpassword>

if that doesn't work , pop on to #oftc and the staff will do the best to help you.
