boot times

#1 Post by Grifter »

Has anyone tried to optimize their bootup time? And other than omitting unneeded kernel modules and purging programs from init.d, what else can be done to increase the speed? Is anyone running a different init that is faster than the standard one?

And if so, what has your experience with it been?

oh i must say my system boots very fast. I'm using debian etch and it's much faster than ubuntu 6.05 and WinXP on my workstation. On my laptop debian needs much longer to boot (more daemons, developer machine) and one strange thing is that the MTA takes very long to load.

My computer boots, er, rather slowly... I have 1791 packages installed from what I can see, it takes my system about as long to boot as Windows XP...

last time i tried runit I swear I fubar'd my install. maybe I didnt do that last step..might have to try again!

Supposedly switching to dash as the default shell will shave 10% off boot.

Plenty of other little tweaks but personally I dont see the need if you have a slimmed system. I think I usually get about a 30sec boot. Havent measured it in a while though :D Boot time was brought up at debconf.
